Solid groups you should hit up MF Doom and Brother Ali is sweet. RZA (of the Wu-Tang Clan) made a sweet CD last year maybe it was this year school messes me up. But anyways it's called Wu-Tang Meets The Indie Culture:Think Differently Music. It's got all sorts of good underground rappers on it. You should also check out Del the Funky Homosapien. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
Yeah there's a whole lot of good underground hip hop out there - I was mainly trying to think of artists that are easily appreciated and easy to pick up and enjoy on the first listen.
Deltron3030 and Del tha Funkee Homosapien are the same dude (Kool Keith, The Automator, and just Del are some of the other names he goes by) and I think that you'll find that the Deltron3030 stuff is a little more mainstream-sounding.
-> Death Cab for Cutie - We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes (they were soooo amazing before the emo fags realized his lyrics are deep, latched on, and ruined this band. arrg)
-> The Postal Service - Give Up (this was great for about 4 months last year - until you were forced to hear the songs everywhere. Now that those movies died and all those commercials have stopped airing, I like it again.)
-> Radiohead - OK Computer (don't listen to these fruitcakes that like godawful mainstream horseshiat music and say that Radiohead didn't deserve to make the BotB. Personally, I think they are and will eventually be widely recognized as the Zeppelin of this generation.)
I edited this down to the bands I've listened to... definitely agree with this lot and will be checking out the other things you listed ASAP... 'cause dammit, it looks like you've got some good taste in music. And yeah, Deltron3030 kicks all sorts of ass.
'CUNA-MANIA IS RUNNING WILD! "You will be a king here, instead of a peasant at the Cafe."
I recently downloaded the pre-idol stuff by Taylor Hicks. I've heard a lot of good stuff about his stuff. I like it. Anybody have any other suggestions of artists similar to his genre. Not really sure how to explain it. It's kind of blues/jazz with great vocal parts and background piano/sax and occasional instrument solos.
If you're into traditional Irish music, try Clannid.
That baked bean feller had a lot of good bands on his list. If you like My Morning Jacket, Deathcab, and Radiohead then you may want to check out these:
Spoon-Gimme Fiction
Wilco-A Ghost is Born FYI-the greatest concert(small arenas) band I have ever seen.
The Killers-Hot Fuss
Beck-Guero (though most any Beck CD will suffice)
More atmospheric sounds include:
Moby-Play
Air-Walkie Talkie
Massive Attack-Mezzanine*already mentioned but worth repeating
Sneaker Pimps-Becoming X
(As an asides, 3B nice mentioning Jeff Buckley. Grace is hypotizing. Huge props )

i saw My Morning Jacket live when they opened for Pearl Jam, and i thought they were really good. but i honestly thought that Z sorta sucked. maybe its because i didnt take blackbean's advice and listen to It Still Moves first.
Kudos to Leber for the amazing sig and to Metroid for the userbar and making them both fit 2008 and 2009 Defunct Dynasty League Champion

I dig Carbon Leaf too - used to always hear them on DC 101 when I was at UMD.
The Dude's favorite music right now is:
Cake
Weezer
Ben Folds
Marcy Playground (yes, I know, they're the sex and candy band, but their two subsequent albums were even better than the first album)
Death Cab (I totally agree on that one)
Mike Doughty (front man of soul coughing's solo stuff)
and I'm so unhip all over the Arctic Monkeys and Panic at the Disco bandwagons.
