The argument I hear most often is that with a 16 team league, you play every team exactly once. With 10 and 12 team leagues, a team will play some once and others twice.
The argument is then made that playing all teams exactly once removes all vagaries and "strength-of-schedule" considerations. I don't necessarily believe that, and still think that 16 teams dilutes the available NFL talent too much. The waiver wire gets picked clean, and / or you may end up starting bit players or players on bye. Sorry, I don't want to have to know who the Chicago Bears 4th WR is.
