FBI Arrests 7 In Alleged Sears Tower Terror Plot
Statement From Sears Tower

Dan Rea
Reporting

(CBS4) Seven alleged terrorists accused of planning an attack on Chicago’s Sears Tower are under arrest.

The FBI says the foiled terror plot was in its early planning stages.

The group of seven men in their teens and 20's, made up of mostly Americans, allegedly had been planning to attack the Chicago’s Sears Tower and other U.S. buildings.

FBI agents raided a Miami warehouse using a blowtorch to open a secured metal door. That's where seven alleged terrorists had been living for more than a year, running what neighbors describe as a military boot camp.

“All you could do was see their eyes,” said Patricia Sands of Miami, Florida. “They had the whole head wrapped up with just their eyes showing."

An undercover FBI agent had infiltrated the group to learn about an alleged plot to attack several U.S. buildings -- including the country's tallest, The Sears Tower in Chicago.

“It’s in the news constantly, the war in Iraq, so you kind of, become numb,” said Dave Knuts of Chicago. “Cause of the whole situation. Doesn't really scare you anymore."

Representative Ed Markey (D-Massachusetts) says the FBI did a wonderful job, and this type of protection, without question, needs to continue. “Cuts in the budget to protect densely populated urban areas like Boston, New York and Washington, DC are completely unjustified."

The FBI says there is no imminent threat to Miami or any other city. 250,000 people are expected in downtown Miami on Friday for the Miami Heat NBA championship parade.

High security measures were already in place for that event.

There are press conferences scheduled for later this morning in Washington, DC and Miami.

The group made things easy for the FBI because they would come out at night and exercise -- prompting the suspicion of neighbors.

Let's see, a representative from Massachusetts is complaining about funding cuts in Boston based on a group in Miami planning an attack in Chicago. Hmmm.
