I agree that Belicheck will not be happy, but in another sense, it is a business.
Having said that, I don't like that he fired him, the example with Benson says it all. Is it worth getting behind in possibly one of the most complicated offenses in the game? He'll find out, one way or another.
I don't know why everyone is assuming this means that Maroney wants to hold out. If anything, I think the agent is more likely to be pro-hold-out - the idea that Maroney wants to hold out and he fired his agent because he (the agent) didn't support that seems a little far fetched.
He probably just didn't like how the agent was handling the negotiations - really doesn't have to imply at all a holdout.
