A guy is joining my league this year. This is a well-established league with owners who have belonged for over a decade. I replaced an old owner with a newbie, who I understand doesn't have much experience with fantasy football at all.
Now he's asking me for advice on where to go for stats, cheats, etc.
First off, there's no way I'm telling him about the Cafe. This place is my secret weapon. You have to keep your aces, you know?
So, what would you do? Should I point him in the direction of some resources I know of, or should I let him learn as he goes? What's my responsibility here?
One last thing - this guy is really nice, I like him a lot, and he's the pastor at my church. So I don't want to be a jerk here.
I would just give him a little push in the right direction, a couple sites that have cheatsheets/rankings, obviously not the ones you use. I have also just copied into a document an overview of FF. I think I found it at footballguys.com and sent him on his way.
Give the dude some basic advice. Point him to a couple of general rankings.
What site is your league using? Most fantasy sites have built in ranking/player articles. I went through my first year of fantasy football without the cafe (How? I'll never know) by reading some stuff from general sites. Maybe point him to footballguys.
If you don't direct him to the Cafe, you're going straight to hell.
Seriously, I would tell him to just search the web for fantasy sites (you could be nice and give him some of the more reputable ones) and let him take it from there. Maybe some friendly beginner advice, such as take a RB first, take kickers and defenses last and so forth. Not too much info that the other guys would get mad that you are helping him out, but enough so he doesn't have a miserable time.
You want to make him feel like your helping him, so he will gain your trust and you can pursue trades with him, without his first instrict of getting a trade offer from you that you are trying to rip him off him because his lesser football knowledge.
I have 1 Rule: Dont tell anyone about the Cafe. They would be able to get on here and see my rankings and what not and use them in the same draft....trade inquiries and see my questions when it comes to picking up a player and then swooping them up in front of me.
When it comes to draft rankings i tell them to use yahoo's pre-made ones I know its being an ass, but its easier for them, and they feel its right.
Also point them to espn.com's stats, where half the time they just look at whose in the top 5 and then they put them at the top of their list.
When it comes in the season and they ask me if a trade the are making with another owner i will help. I wont give them a direct yes or no answer, but i help compare why it may favor them or not, or help their team or not.
The franchise he bought into has these players, of which he can keep six:
Larry Johnson, KC
Steven Jackson, STL
Tony Gonzalez, KC
Willie Parker, PIT
TJ Houshmandzadeh, CIN
Drew Brees, NO
Donte Stallworth, NO
Buccaneers, Team Defense, TB
Reggie Brown, PHI
Sam Gado, GB
Joey Harrington, MIA
Kevin Jones, DET
Tyrone Calico, TEN
Chris Henry, CIN
Jimmy Smith, ret
Rian Lindell, BUF
I think he'll do pretty well - that's almost an idiot-proof group of keepers.

Send him to FFToolbox... It's a good place for beginners... Similar to the Cafe, but without all of that pesky accuracy...

Did the previous owner of that team die? That's the only way I could see someone giving that up!
