1st Rounder, McCargo Signs, Whitner Still Negotiating

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (July 28, 2006) -- The Buffalo Bills agreed on a five-year contract with defensive tackle John McCargo, the second of the team's two first-round draft picks.

McCargo's agent, Hadley Engelhard, said he expected his client to sign the deal when he arrived at the Bills training camp site in suburban Rochester later in the day. The move came shortly after the team held its first practice of camp.

The move leaves Buffalo with one unsigned prospect, safety Donte Whitner, who was selected eighth overall out of Ohio State.

McCargo was selected 26th overall out of North Carolina State, where he was a three-year starter and played on the same line as ends Mario Williams, the first player taken in the draft by Houston, and Manny Lawson, selected 22nd by San Francisco.

In Buffalo, McCargo is expected to open the season as a backup to Larry Tripplett.

Listed at 6-foot-2 and 301 pounds, McCargo is noted for his quickness and ability to penetrate, strong assets in the style of defense the Bills intend to play under new coach Dick Jauron.

The knock against McCargo is that he missed six games with a foot injury as a junior last season.
