Sometimes it seems like the best way to defend your home is to leave everything unlocked and have one of these handy:

Guess I'm going to have to get an alarm system :-o Or maybe a gun hooked up to a motion sensor like the one that knapplc has :-b

Meh.. if you're really worried, move to Canada. They leave their doors unlocked anyways.

I think I'm pretty safe with my alarm system, dogs and the loaded 44 under my pillow.

Just kidding about the loaded gun. They're all locked away.

I had a buddy who, years ago, had his house broken into while he was sleeping. He woke up and found the guy walking through his house. The perp should have robbed a different house. My buddy's pretty big, about 6'5", pushing 300#, and he beat the crap out of this guy. Apparently he had the guy pleading for him to stop hitting him before the cops showed up. I wasn't there, of course, but he's not one, nor his wife, to conjure up a story.

I've got the locks, I've got the security system;
but it's really the 90#'s of block-headed muscle annd teeth I rely upon.

Had a rottweiler growing up and he was the biggest softie of a dog you'd ever come across. But his bark was intimidating and at 120+ pounds, so was his appearance. Out on the farm, he'd be just sitting outside the house. A couple times some Mexicans drove up the driveway looking to walk our beans, or some other sort of work. When they saw the dog and nobody else around, they just back right back out the driveway. My dad had 2 boys to walk the beans. :-[

I live alone so I've got a loaded 12 gauge shotgun by my bed. That'll protect me while I'm home. Unfortunately it doesn't do much while I'm away.
