SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Carolina All-Pro receiver Steve Smith appeared closer to returning from a hamstring injury Monday, going through agility drills and catching balls on the side during the Panthers' afternoon workout.
Smith, who strained his left hamstring while running a long route on the first day of camp July 29, rode a stationary bike in the morning workout. He ran and caught balls on a separate field while the rest of the team practiced in the afternoon.
Coach John Fox has declined to set a timetable for Smith's return and Smith hasn't talked to reporters since camp started. It's unlikely Smith will play in the exhibition opener Saturday against Buffalo in Charlotte.
In Smith's absence, Keary Colbert and Drew Carter have split time with the first team opposite new Panther Keyshawn Johnson.
