Knee injury ends season for Vikes' Greenway
NFL.com wire reports
MINNEAPOLIS (Aug. 15, 2006) -- Vikings rookie linebacker Chad Greenway is out for the season, the result of a knee injury he sustained in Minnesota's first exhibition game.
Greenway was hurt covering a kickoff in the 16-13 loss to the Oakland Raiders. He had an MRI test, but a news release issued by the team didn't specify the nature of the injury.
Coaches and players were unavailable for comment Aug. 15, the first day off for the Vikings since training camp began.
In a prepared statement, coach Brad Childress said he was confident the first-round draft pick would be "completely healthy for the 2007 season."
While he has been the backup weakside linebacker to E.J. Henderson all spring and summer, Greenway was destined for a significant role in the defense -- especially on passing downs. His athleticism is a good fit for special teams, too, which was where he was playing when he got hurt.
"The toughest part in this business is dealing with the injuries and this is no different," said Vikings head coach Brad Childress. "It's unfortunate because Chad improved during our minicamps, OTAs and training camp. He did a pretty good job in the plays he was in there for last night and made a big tackle on special teams. Chad will evaluate his options in the upcoming weeks and we are confident he will be completely healthy for the 2007 season. Chad will have the full time to rehab."
