Well since it's your first sig I'll go easy on you and throw a tip your way. Usually beveled text doesn't look that good. Simple is sometimes better(not saying all the time though ) but seriously, just take a look at some others work around here and just learn from it

background kinda okay maybe refine the left area so it will look better;
text just make it smaller and simple. The simpler the better.

try using a bigger pic, a more square text, and desaturate the bg a little and fill it with a low-opacity layer of red or yellow. assuming ur using photoshop...dunno if/how to do all that on gimp
