Ward vs. Randal El & Green vs. Thompson

Postby les » Mon Aug 26, 2002 10:33 pm

Who will end up being the better #2 options for their respective teams?

Ward vs. Randall El-

Should I drop Hines Ward and p/u Randall El? I'm thinking Randall El will end up being a better scorer this year, especially if Ward misses any time for the appendix. I know it's only preseason, but Randall El has looked electric so far. If he gets more playing time due to Wards surgery, I fell he will impress and Cowher will stick with.

Jaquez Green vs. Darrius Thompson.
I also have Green and am thinking of dropping for Thompson. Everything I have heard is that Thompson should end up with the #2 spot. Again I know it's only preseason, but I noticed that Darrius didn't have single catch Saturday. Does anyone know how the #2 spot is panning out in Was?

This is an 11 team Dynasty league and neither Ward or Jaquez were penciled in as starters for me. I can afford to gamble on these but am looking for 2nd opinions.

Ward and Green. Here's my projections on them:

Ward (90 rec./950 yds./5 Tds)

Green (60 rec./800 yrds./5 Tds)

Randle El could have a decent year, but he also could fall too far into the depth chart to get enough receptions to have fantasy value.

Hines Ward will definitely be the guy in Pittsburgh as long as he's healthy. Cowher sticks with his veterans. Randle El will be utilized -- possibly even in a Slash manner -- but Ward will be the man. I'm not as certain about the situation with the Redskins. I think that's a little more up-for-grabs, although Green certainly has an edge in experience.

As for the first question, neither

And I'm a Steelers fan and I'll say stay away from either. If you need one of those two as an every week starter, you're in trouble.

Ward would be valuable in leagues you get points for receptions. But, after that, minimal impact. He barely averaged 10 years per catch, and almosty certainly will see his receptions # drop. Also, when the Steelers get near the endzone, he is at best option #4 after Bettis (or whoever is at RB) Stewart and Burress.

Randle El, while maybe nice for special and trick plays, probably won't break 45 catches. If you get points for special team yardage, then he might be attractive, but return yardage is not something you can really count on.
