ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that Shawne Merriman has been notified that he will be suspended four games by the NFL for violating the league's steroid policy.
According to the report, the test is "definitely for steroids … not one of those supplement deals." The NFL has somehow managed to avoid a full-blown steroids controversy despite many infractions. That will change now that one of the league's brightest young stars tested positive. With OLB Shaun Phillips also out 4-6 weeks, San Diego's linebacker group is in rough shape. Yeah, I don't see it happening either, but I agree, this sucks.

Merriman was gonna be a guy who would lead the league and might even because the best player in the league on D one day. Now, there is going to be a cloud over him his entire career.
