This is the first time I've ever actually paid attention to one of these threads, but it's a slow time at work so I'll give it a shot.
1) I don't think Fir trees are even indigenous to Florida. (Leans toward Germany)
2) I live in Florida, and we don't refer to too many places here by "region" (Leans toward Germany)
3) Considering Germany uses the metric system "8000 Sq Feet" seems like a hint it might be in America, but it could only mean that the article was written for American readers. (Slightly leans towards Florida)
I'm 90% sure it's Germany.

im gonna go with germany. 8000 feet thing isnt exactly a giveaway, and like josebach said, im not sure if Fir trees even grow in Florida.

Thieves steal entire forest
From correspondents in Oberstein, Germany
November 14, 2006 11:06pm
Article from: Agence France-Presse
THIEVES in southern Germany made off with an entire forest, police said.
The theft was discovered by the 56-year-old owner when he went to check on the trees in the Hunsrueck region south of Frankfurt.
The man was shocked to find they had disappeared over an area of 2500 square metres - about half the size of a football field.
Police said the thieves appeared to be professionals who used different cutting devices to chop down the fir trees and drive away with them.
GERMANY is correct... Another one coming soon...

I debated a change there too but to be honest I am not a horticulturalist so I was not sure whether they were or not...

DUH! and that would have pretty much defeated the purpose - like searching for the article did...
