protecting the QB

Postby A Fleshner Fantasy » Tue Dec 05, 2006 6:40 pm

I figured I would make a thread that did not involve BCS rankings...

I know in the NFL there has been a lot of talk as to whether or not the league is protecting the QB too much. Are the rules the same in college? Because I very rarley hear about controversy, whereas I do a lot in the NFL.

They do have the illegal blow to the head, helmet to helmet, and roughing the passer like the NFL but they do not ever rule the QB down for being "in the grasp" of the defender and rarely do you see a QB called down for forward progress... although hypothetically I guess it could be called.

I don't believe hitting the QB low, falling with the weight of your body while tackling the QB, or cuddling the QB slightly too roughly are penalties in college, whereas all three are penalties in the NFL.

Urlacher was actually penalized against the Vikes last weekend for "flexing his arm" when he pushed Brad Johnson. 15 yards for not keeping his arm straight. It wasn't even close to a penalty, but they called it anyway.

Jack Lambert once suggested they put skirts on the QB's when they started changing the rules to protect them (he was actually a QB in H.S.)
