There have been a rash of threads lately about the "unnecessary" use of force by police officers. This is just a reminder of the risk police officers face each and every day. My brother was a Tallahassee Police Officer for 9 years and I'll be damned if the crap he had to put up with and the risk he had to face was worth the salary he made. I'm not tying to earn props by sticking up for the cops or anything, I just think they deserve a little more respect than what some people here give them.
I totally understand where you are coming from. I am in the process of trying to become a towship police officer for the area that I just moved too. How is it that sports players, can make tons more money than, Police Officers, Fire Fighters, School Teachers, etc?
Nice job, Jose. I get tired of all the publicity the occasional bad cop or soldier gets, while there are literally millions of honorable examples out there.

Because no one spends tons of money to watch them work.

Ever seen the show 'Cops' or watched a movie or TV show with a cop in it?

Only the bad ones get the headlines unfortunately - when a policeman does something wrong in NY for example, it gets splashed all over the front pages and everyone assumes all the police are like that. It just wouldn't be interesting for the NY Times to print that 34,999 police officers did their job today to the best of their ability and with the best of intentions - people just wanna hear about the one bad apple!

With the obvious exception being the recent incident where police saved a man from an alligator.
Then again, that incident might have made the news, solely on the fact that a naked crackhead was attacked by an alligator.
On a serious note, I agree with you on this issue. To the media, the only good news, is bad news. They are after ratings, and not out to keep up the reputation and integrity of anyone. It's unfortunate that the entire law enforcement community has to be labeled reckless, when in all actuality, this label is only fitting for a small percentage of officers.

Actually, the government spends quite a bit of money for students to sit in my class and watch me work. Unfortunately, they don't spend enough.
I've been contemplating selling all the cell phones I've confiscated this year. I've got a gigantic box full.

Great post! Its shame but cops are one of the many severely under-appreciated professions in this country. In an ideal world the highest paying jobs would be:
1) Doctors (ability to save lives, is there any greater skill?)
2) Police/Fire (daily risk of their own life to secure safety for others)
3) Teachers (given that democracy is supposed to function with educated masses, it only makes sense)

Yes, and the revenues from the show 'Cops' does not go to the cops that are depicted. And the people on TV shows and in movies are called actors. They are the one's that get paid not the cops.
And you can't even begin to believe those things can come close to comparing to the revenue that the NFL pulls in can you?
