I didn't even know they made them that big. That's got to be like the price of a decent car. 8-o

heh, and somewhere a man works a 16 hour shift for a cup of rice to feed his family of 20.

Seriously though, 60,000 bucks? How many of those do they expect to sell?

Awesome choice on the HL-S5688. I've got the 6187 myself (same TV except 61" and lacks PiP, cablecard, and QAM) and I love it.

Now it's time to jump onboard the HD-DVD train with football season almost over ;)

Man, all this making me wish I had a bigger TV :,-(

Seriously though, I just got a new TV, 37" so it's not bad. I just wish I had some 70"+ juggernaut of a television :-)

At least it's an LCD though cause my old one was junk.

Yah. I spent 4 months bouncing between the Sammy, the Sony, and the Mits but mainly between the Sammy and the Mits. It's a tough, tough choice. But I feel good about the call.

My buddy just got a new LCD TV (only 38", poor soul) and was talking about spending $200 for the HD-DVD add-on to his XBOX 360. I was skeptical b/c it's unclear if HD-DVD will come out on top or Bluray but he pointed out that he didn't have to buy the DVD's, just get them from Netflix. So even if Bluray wins, not that big of a deal. All he'd be out would be the $200 for the XBOX addition. And one of my brothers loaned me his 360 for the next six months while he has another go-around at finishing his BA so could do myself. I will say watching the trial Bluray disk on a A2000 in the SonyStyle store was freakin' awesome.

And the PiP was key. I didn't want to buy a honking big TV unless I could taunt friends by having the equivalent of two TVs bigger than theirs on screen.

They probably don't expect to sell many of these to people. It's likely businesses (like bars, restaurants, etc) who will be the prime source of buyers for TVs this big.

It wasn't all that long ago where a 55" plasma used to cost $15,000. Kinda makes me wonder how long it would be until the next new screen tech comes out and drops the prices on current TVs even further. I know that LCD may soon go the way of the dodo with the new OLED stuff that should become more mainstream soon.
