Peterson's dad says there's no rush to come out

Fiesta might be last-chance showcase for Sooners' Peterson

For the record, Adrian Peterson and family don't need the money. Not in a roof-over-our-head, where's-our-next-meal-coming-from sense.

"The family can hold on, that's what I tell him every day," said the father of Oklahoma's junior tailback.

Nelson Peterson is less than three months out of federal prison, but he and his family are not destitute. His seven-year hitch in the joint for money laundering made national headlines when dad finally saw son play as a collegian on Oct. 14.

That also happened to be the day that the kid they call A.D. (All Day) was all done. He broke his collarbone in a flamboyant dive into the end zone at the end of a touchdown run. His regular season was finished.

The speculation was just beginning.

Logic screams loudly that Monday's Fiesta Bowl against Boise State will be Peterson's final college game. Get a good look. Having missed more than 2½ months, this is his college all-star game, NFL audition wrapped around a BCS bowl.

Injuries to his shoulders, ankle and clavicle make it a common sense decision to declare for the NFL Draft before the mid-January deadline.

Having been a Heisman runner-up and part of two Big 12 champions, there is little more to accomplish. For free.

But Nelson Peterson insists the family can wait another year. As part of his plea agreement, Nelson forfeited three of the four houses he owned in Palestine, Texas, keeping and maintaining one while he was in prison.

"Your daddy's all right, I tell him," said Nelson who now works as a car porter at an Oklahoma City BMW dealer. "A four-bedroom ... that's already paid for. There's no rush for him to come out."

A.D.'s return to play after missing the past seven games is at least Story I-A of this Fiesta. It might even overshadow Boise State making only the second appearance by a mid-major in a BCS bowl.

Either way, the Fiesta has become more than the exhibitions the four non-championship BCS bowls have veered toward in the new double-hosting format.

"I get hit with it all the time now," Adrian said. "People think definitely, 'He's going to the league,' but there are a lot of things I want to accomplish."

Peterson could chase the Heisman (again) next year. He finished a close second as a freshman in 2004. He is 151 yards away from Billy Sims' school rushing record. Sims spent four years getting his numbers. Peterson has gotten his in less than three.

Security and wealth are two different things, though. Nelson Peterson has that house, but he could soon be helping his son manage a signing bonus in the double-digit millions. The family has talked to agents about representation about their son. Adrian already is projected as a top five pick who could be the first running back taken in the draft. Not bad for a guy who has missed the equivalent of a season (11 games) in his three-year career because of injuries.

That screaming logic says that if you're going to get hurt, you might as well get paid for it.

"I understand NFL people hoping to steal him coming out this year will say he's injury prone," Nelson said.

Dad calls the ankle sprain in the '05 opener against TCU no big deal, "like a common cold," he said. The collarbone was "a fluke." Peterson was originally declared out for the season. Only his drive to get well for the bowl game will get him on the field in Glendale.

"If it was up to him he would have put a Band-Aid on that collarbone," Dad said.

Positives of coming out: Money. Certainty. Why risk more injury and his draft stock?

Positives of staying in school: Camaraderie, which Peterson swears is a big part of coming back -- to be with his teammates again. There's also a chance to chase a Heisman and a championship. The college football thing was enough to keep superstars Peyton Manning and Matt Leinart around.

The smart money says that the Fiesta is Peterson's college all-star game, a one-shot bowl to show the pros he's still got the moves, the 40 and the healthy body.

But remember, it's not about money.

Said Dad: "It's about just playing the game."

He's coming out. I don't think there's any question about this. That money is too good to pass up, and he probably won't want to risk pulling a Matt Leinart.

I'm sure he will. But why would Miami want him when they already have Brown? I highly doubt Miami goes with another Rb when they have other more dire needs to assess.

I would think he would come out - but if Oakland wants Quinn, he might be afraid of ending up in that black hole that is Detroit if they're gonna be without Jones for a significant portion of the season and looking for help at RB - that would be enough to scare me into staying in school for another year!

Talked to 3 OU students at the bar who are out here for the Fiesta. They claimed to have the inside scoop that AP loves OU and loves CFB, but that he's 90% commited to leaving. (For whatever its worth. :-b )
