When is a good time to...

Start a slow draft, of around 15 rounds. It obviously should be started at least a few weeks after the NFL Draft (because of the signings the next few weeks). The NFL Draft will be over before May starts (29th and 30th of April last year). I'd like to be able to comfortably finish the draft before pre-season begins.

So my question to you guys is, when do I start it? When do you guys start yours and whats your situation?

You could probably get it done in 4-5 weeks depending how involved the owners are. It also depends on the number of teams and if people are going to be on vacation. You always want to have it as close the the start of the season as possible, I wouldn't worry as much about finishing it before pre-season. There is generally a 24 hour pick time limit to help speed things up.

I also think right after the NFL draft is the best time. I prefer doing live drafts, like at fantasy football caculator.com. The problem there is , obviously you can't reserve a slot. But I for one, am willing to do as many mocks as I can. I am currently in one now, but they tend to move along very slowly. Gets a little aggravating, but I don't know what else to do.

I was in 4 slow drafts last year, and although each draft allowed for up to 24 hrs per pick, the slowest draft finished in just over 5 weeks....

That considers that some of the delay was due to it occuring over summer vacations, and that some folks had to pass along their picks to others to place.

All in all, if I have a choice... a live Yahoo draft is absolutely the best and most enjoyable for me.

Ok maybe I should add some info here, its 12 owners, 24 hour pick limit, last year we didn't complete the originally played 24 round draft, started in mid-to-late July, we got through 17 rounds before the season started, so we altered our plans. anyways we have around 15 rounds this year and I would prefer to get it done before Pre-season so people have a fair chance at picking up the nobody who just had a good game, instead of it going to whos on the clock. SO dates?

We have 8 owners and start the slow draft in June and usually finish late July. Although, I was once in a 16 owner draft, which started in February, then had a seperate rookie draft. I would recommend starting the draft by June, and if it stays on schedule, you should be fine.

Then I had a 10 round slow draft (after we kept 4 from our initial 6 round keeper draft) with 12 owners that took forever to the point where we almost didn't finish before the season started.

Absolutely! I was involved in a 24 round draft which was over in two weeks, but we had 10 very active owners committed to finishing on time. As long as you have a committment from the owners, and there is plenty of communication between the commish and the owners, there is no reason you couldn't start in June and be done by pre-season.

I couldn't agree more. Last season i did 2 slow drafts here, one had very committed owners the other didn't. Both had 12 owners and was 24 rounds. One took 3 weeks the other took 6 weeks.
