The Chargers hired Ron Rivera to fill a role as a defensive assistant on their staff, most likely as their linebacker coach.
The Bears announced that they wouldn't renew Rivera's contract Monday, likely over philosophical differences with Lovie Smith. It's a surprising hire for the Bolts considering Rivera interviewed for the head coaching job, and was passed over for Norv Turner. Ted Cottrell got the defensive coordinator job.

WOW!!!!!
That is EXTREMELY surprising. I can't believe that he is going to be a LB coach instead of a DC somewhere.
Take the job you can get i guess. I bet he is thinking its only for one year so why not
Yeah, I guess so. I am surprised at how fast this went too. I mean, he didn't even seem to test the market out unless he had done that before he was "fired"
I guess Ron's thinking was a one year "placeholder" gig in the hopes of getting a HC job in '08 but still, why not wait a few days in the hopes of getting a DC gig somewhere? Maybe he figures he can get a ring while he's waiting.
Should be interesting to see what effect his tutelage has on Merriman.
