Steelers Sign Mahan, He Could Play Center Posted Mar 10th 2007 1:37PM by Ryan Wilson
The Pittsburgh Steelers finally got on the free-agency tote board, and man, it's a big one. From PewterReport.com: Tampa Bay free agent offensive lineman Sean Mahan agreed to terms on a contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers Saturday... Mahan, 26, has started 36 of the 57 games he's played in since entering the NFL in 2003 as a fifth-round draft pick out of Notre Dame. Mahan's versatility makes him valuable -- he's played center and both guard positions -- but the Steelers like him at center.
The plan is for Mahan, Kendall Simmons and Chukky Okobi to battle for the job now that Jeff Hartings has retired. The early odds have Okobi -- who's due a $2 million salary in 2007 -- the odd man out.
Simmons was the Steelers first-round pick in 2002 and when not injured has been the team's starting right guard. Pittsburgh likes his athleticism and thinks he could make the transition to center. This is exactly what Hartings did when he arrived from Detroit, and it resulted in a couple of Pro-Bowl appearances.
If Mahan wins out, it could mean next season will be Simmons' last. His contract is up and he's had an uneven career at right guard (adult-onset diabetes and blowing out your knee will do that, I guess ... but still, it doesn't change the fact he's been inconsistent). Whatever, welcome to the wild world of free agency, Pittsburgh Steelers.

No, Mahan is grabage, there is a reason the Bucs with as crappy of a line as we have let him do
The Pittsburgh Steelers provided themselves depth, flexibility and competition on the offensive line Saturday afternoon, reaching an agreement with unrestricted free agent blocker Sean Mahan.
The five-year deal is worth $17 million and includes a signing bonus believed to be about $4 million.
From ESPN:
A versatile lineman who started 36 games during his four seasons in Tampa Bay, Mahan was arguably one of the top offensive linemen still available on the free agent market. He will be reunited with Pittsburgh rookie coach Mike Tomlin, a former assistant on the Bucs' staff.
Mahan also drew interest from Seattle and Cleveland in the past week, and Tampa Bay attempted to re-sign him as well

I know we attempted to re-sign him, my point is we have the mobney and a horrible line, so if he was worth it they would have paid it
