Dolphins sign Cory Schlesinger

Postby sox 06 » Sun Mar 11, 2007 4:04 pm

Twelve-year veteran fullback Cory Schlesinger, who played his entire career with the Detroit Lions before becoming an unrestricted free agent two weeks ago, has reached agreement with the Miami Dolphins on a $2 million, two-year contract.

Schlesinger visited with Miami officials last week.

A prototype fullback during most of his Detroit tenure, and regarded leaguewide as one of the NFL's premier lead blockers, Schlesinger's role was dramatically diminished in the offense installed by Lions' offensive coordinator Mike Martz last season. The Martz system rarely employs a fullback and Schlesinger did not log a single carry and registered only eight receptions.

The eight "touches" in 2006 were the fewest for Schlesinger since 1996.

In Miami, though, first-year coach Cam Cameron feels that Schlesinger, even at age 34, can be an effective escort for tailback Ronnie Brown. During his time as the San Diego offensive coordinator, Cameron witnessed the importance of standout fullback Lorenzo Neal to Chargers' tailback LaDainian Tomlinson, and feels Schlesinger can fill that same role.

Schlesinger never carried more than 49 times in a season in Detroit and never rushed for more than 154 yards. But his value as a blocker and a receiver twice made him a Pro Bowl alternate. In 2001, he notched 60 receptions.

For his career, Schlesinger has 167 carries for 473 yards and five touchdowns. He also has 197 catches for 1,445 yards and nine scores.

The former Nebraska star was a sixth-round choice in the 1995 draft. He has played in 181 games, including 87 as a starter.

As good of a lead blocking fullback as there is in the NFL and a pretty good character as well. Significantly improves Ronnie Brown's fantasy status as far as I'm concerned, but every other position in Miami is a concern.

Seems like Cameron realized how valuable Neal was that he's going to place importance on getting a good lead blocker. I like this move alot.

I was thinking the same thing when i saw this. He is trying to recreate the SD offense. This can only help Brown

I'm glad to see Cory getting some props. Not only is he a fine football player but he's a man of fine character as well. And ending his career in Miami is going to be pretty nice. At least it's warm. :-b

One other thing - this does NOT help Tatum Bell's chances to be a respectable fantasy back. Losing one of the best blocking backs in the NFL plus having to run behind that O-Line - Bell's stock just took a hit with this, too.

i dont think Martz's offense really utilizes the FB...so i'm not sure how much it matters

Cory is a great Football player though and great character, sad to see him leave Detroit :,-(

I wish Sledge well in Miami, there are worse places for Lions' refugees to land.
Not sure how much game he has left in the tank though. He has taken a ton of hits over the years, as his collection of mangled face masks would attest.
Darn shame such an under-appreciated FB had to languish in Honalulu Blue and Silver.
