Continuing their shopping spree on defense, the Jets agreed to terms yesterday with former Dolphins defensive end David Bowens, according to an NFL source. Unlike the previous two signings, Andre Wadsworth and Michael Haynes, Bowens isn't a bargain-basement retread.
Bowens will sign a three-year, $6.1 million contract, which includes escalators that could bring the total to $8 million. Though he's too small (6-3, 265) to be an every-down lineman in the Jets' 3-4 scheme, Bowens will be a situational pass rusher and possibly an outside linebacker.
As a part-time player for the Dolphins, Bowens recorded 18 sacks over the last three seasons, although his total dipped to five last year. Bowens, who turns 30 in July, picked the Jets over the Panthers, Patriots and Dolphins. The latter two teams only offered one-year contracts.
The Jets have made a concerted effort to improve the front seven via free agency, which should allow them to focus on other areas in next month's draft. Sources say they're targeting a cornerback with their first-round pick (25th overall), with Miami tight end Greg Olsen also on their radar. Pitt's Darrelle Revis and Texas' Aaron Ross are among the corners that could be available for the Jets.
The additions of Bowens and ex-Cowboy Kenyon Coleman, who recently signed a five-year, $20 million contract, will provide much-needed depth in the front seven. Instead of relying on Bryan Thomas and Shaun Ellis to produce an outside rush in passing situations, the Jets can add Bowens and Coleman (a likely starter at end) to the rotation. The versatile Coleman can move inside on passing downs.
Nice signing as we need guys who can rush the QB so we don't have to blitz every down. Hopefully he can have the same success with us that he had with the Dolphins. Unfortunately we don't have a Jason Taylor on the other side.
