Is this bad form? Taboo? I love Chief Wahoo, and I feel like the team is trying to phase him out and go to the scipt "I."
The older Wahoo seems to stir up some debate, if not the newer one. Should I skip this and roll with the Wahoo of today, or a different hat?
For reference
Chief Wahoo today:
The Script "I" :
And a political cartoon on the subject:
(I suppose discussion of the Redskins logo would also be appropriate)
well the logo was never in question, it was the use of the word "Redskin" which is deemed derrogatory by some native americans.
as for you and the chief wahoo, go for it. I think most baseball fans and people that at least acknowlege baseball will know you're not anti native american indian, or touting a moniker that says i hate em.

Are you asking us if it is ok for you to buy and wear this hat? If I was a fan of the Indians I'd wear the hat, but that's a decision you have to make. My wife's Native American and she's quite proud of her Atlanta Braves.

Not asking if it's ok, or for permission really. Just asking for opinions.

It's paying homage to a great class of people by naming a professional franchise after them. Like the Titans and Vikings.
I'm part Cherokee and the Indian logo, name, etc. never bothered me anyone I know. Same goes for the Braves...with the tomahawk chop. People just like to complain for some reason.
I think its best to research that specific mascot to see if Native Americans have an issue with it. More often than not, they're pretty specific when they find something insulting. That can at least help determine for you if it is something you agree with or if it is something that is trivial.
Someone mentioned that the term "redskin" is the thing some Native Americans find insulting about the Redskins, and that I can understand. And University of Illinois mascot, Chief Illiniwek, is insulting to Native Americans because of the dance that he'd do at games. They say that the dance is sacred and to be done in private, not to entertain a bunch of drunk college kids.
But that's the extent I know about Native Americans taking issue with a sports mascot.
My University back in the day were actually the Miami Redskins (now we are the redhawks) but we changed specifically for this reason because people found the word Redskin to be insulting. I can certainly see where these groups of people are coming from, but I don't think either team is doing something to actively offend anyone, if this were truly offensive it would have been addressed some time ago. I'd say this cartoonist is just trying to stir the pot.
