ADRIAN, Mich. - A 12-year-old boy who has collected more than 150 vacuum cleaners says he is learning to identify them by sound. "I'm getting pretty good at it," Kyle Krichbaum told the Detroit Free Press.

Kyle has been in Hollywood taping a game-show pilot where he had to compete against other contestants blindfolded and correctly identify vacuum models, the newspaper said Saturday.

He said he got his first working model at age 3 and keeps part of his collection in his room.

"When I was really little I would always follow my parents around when they were vacuuming," he said.

Randy and MaryLynn Krichbaum said their son played with a toy vacuum constantly as a toddler.

"At first we thought it was something he would grow out of because babies like noisy things," MaryLynn Krichbaum said. "But his interest just grew stronger and stronger ... where he gets it from, I don't know."

Kyle, whose hobby also has landed him a guest appearance on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," has aspirations of owning a vacuum shop.

Adrian is located about 50 miles southwest of Detroit.

I've actually heard of this kid before. I guess it's a good thing?

I just don't see how that would be useful information. If I really wanted to, I could memorize the sound of all of the different brands of drivers, why? :-?

I've heard of this kid before. Weird little hobby/obsession he has. As far as useful, I'm sure he would be an asset to some vacuum manufacturer or sales team when he gets older. Probably knows more about them than these Rainbow Vacuum guys that stop in your house and vacuum a small corner of your living room. "What about the rest man!?"

What a useless talent. Kind of interesting story, but not really a big deal at all.

Yeah, but probably more useful than most of the stuff you do in school. He could make a career out of this. :-?

To each his own, I guess. Seems pretty useless to me but if that's what he wants to do then so be it. I'm sure the other kids in school ride him relentlessly for it though. How would you like to be known as the vacuum boy?
