We had a similar case here in Quebec a couple years back when a couple tried to name their kid Spatule (and yes, that is French for the kitchen utensil used to flip pancakes and burgers) and the government wouldn't let them...

So under what authority or law or whatnot does the government have the right to tell you what you can or can't name your child? This is foreign to Americans - can you kind of clue us (or at least me) in on this? How does your government have the right to deny you the name you want for your child?
