Anyway, just so it doesn't get lost, you can buy it Knapp from this website, but it is pretty expensive and it looks like it would be quite a bit more than you would need.
I would check if you have some sort of chemical supply store.
There are some great suggestions here guys! Thanks!
I think the potassium iodide can be purchased at some photography supply stores.
I think those tablets you're talking about may be medicinal, and they more than likely have binding agents and stabilizing agents that may throw off the reaction. If I can find some in pure form I'll do that experiment and let you all know how it worked out.
I'll try to do that egg/bottle thing, too. That sounds reasonably easy, as long as I can find a glass bottle. Maybe an old rose vase will work?

I think the big thing is that the egg sits lightly on the opening. Like it can nearly go through, but I have never done it. That would be sweet though if it could go through a longer neck.

oh and I have a strange feelin your gonna explode the egg and get yoke in the eye
I'm sure you could use a butterknife to cut it up and pour it out.
it might not be quite the fun instant reaction you're looking for, but if you place an egg (with the shell still on) in a bowl of vinegar for a few days it will get really big and rubbery
you can also mix large amount of cornstarch with a small amount of water (i forget the exact ratios) and get a cool product. basically you can roll it into a ball and watch it melt again, or if you try to jam a finger through it it resists you but you can push it right through with little preassure
I'm suprised it took a full page for somebody to mention mentos and diet coke!!
Its a new classic and easy and nondangerous and cheap and messy!
If you spray PAM onto a styrofoam cup it will melt it - I learned that one about 20 years ago while trying to do "science at home" with random kitchen crap myself...
