It's tough though, the media is usually scrupulous in their warning.
The media very purposefully adds "alleged" no matter what. There could be video evidence of someone clearly doing it, and its still "alleged." Same thing with verdicts. Sometimes, they avoid "not guilty" for the reason that a typo or printing error could print "guilty." instead.
As long as its conjecture and no statements like "he did it" (that aren't quotes etc.) you have a really tough time suing for this.
The opening scene of the movie "Saving Private Ryan" is loosely based on games of dodgeball Brian Dawkins played in second grade.

While the media was reckless, they're third on the list here. They got fed a BS story that was too tantalizing to resist by the DA. While they were cursory at best, several media outlets devoted significant time towards addressing the facts once they came out, and trying to right a little of the wrong done to these boys in the court of public opinion. The DA and the girl were just plain malicious. The girl probably not as much, because from all accounts, she at least had a reason to be angry and want revenge (doest justify it, but its at least a natural human desire), the DA couldnt care less which 3 boys it was, had nothing against them, but was willing to ruin their lives to further his career. That's fricking inhuman. Its malicious and evil, and if the man does not spend a fair amount of time in jail, that will be the icing on the cake of what is wrong with this country.
He offered a public apology....somehow i dont think that is going to be good enough for the 3 lacrosse players.
From what i've heard Nifong is as good as gone.
I was listening to "The Heard" on wednesday and Collin really lit into the media and DA. He seemed pretty pissed and i think i've got agree with him. The media and the DA office turned this into a witch hunt. They portrayed the lacrosse players as the "rich kids" who got whatever they wanted.
I was going to make a new post since there were so many of them made, but I thought this one had some good comments about her getting what she deserves.
abcnews.com wrote:The woman who was at the center of the phony Duke lacrosse rape case was arrested today and charged with attempted murder.
The Durham Police Department told ABC News that Crystal Gale Mangum got into an argument with her boyfriend, Milton Walker, shortly after midnight on Thursday.
The arrest warrant claims that Mangum, 33, scratched, punched and threw objects at Walker before taking all of his clothes and setting them on fire in a bath tub. Firefighters were sent to the home to extinguish the blaze.
.....
She was also charged with five counts of arson, simple assault, identity theft, damage to property and resist, delay and obstruction of justice. In addition, she faces three counts of child endangerment.
Mangum is being held without bond and her first court appearance is scheduled for today.
Mangum triggered a furor in 2006 when she accused three Duke Lacrosse players of raping her while working at an off campus party. Prosecutor Mike Nifong heightened the seriousness of the charges by declaring the alleged assault a hate crime.
The charges against the three, Reade Seligmann, Collin Finnerty and David Evans, were eventually dropped, but not before it roiled race relations in the university town and the players were suspended from school.
Nifong pursued the prosecution vigorously despite the growing evidence that Mangum had lied about being sexually assaulted and despite the fact that Magnum changed key facts in her version of what happened.
Here are some other threads about the subject, but I'm sure most of you remember it:
