Ravens return specialist B.J. Sams was found not guilty of driving under the influence and negligent driving today in Towson district court.
His five-hour trial ended with Sams being found guilty for a lane violation, which carries a $90 fine.
Judge Nancy Purpura said the state's case was hurt because there was no evidence to show he was drunk. Sams was never offered a Breathalyzer test and his field sobriety test was not fully documented on the state trooper's video.
"I'm not persuaded by a reasonable doubt that he drove while impaired," Purpura said.
Sams did not talk to reporters when leaving the courthouse. Dressed in a black suit with a pink shirt and turquoise tie, Sams gave a big smile and hugged his lawyers a few minutes after the verdict.
"He has been exonerated and he's excited about that," said Andrew Alperstein, Sams' lawyer.
It is unknown whether Sams, who broke his ankle in November, will participate in the Ravens' first minicamp, which begins Thursday.
"As both we said and B.J. said at the beginning, there is a due process," Ravens spokesman Kevin Byrne said. "There is an opportunity to give your side of the story. We are glad how it worked out for B.J."
