there are many to think about. but for me, i am either going with steve mcqueen's character in the great escape or young vito corleone portrayed by robert de niro in the godfather part ii.

Good question. There's so many to choose from, but there's a handful that make my short list.

Doc Holliday from Tombstone has to top the list. I've rarely encountered such a cool character in a film. So many great quotes, such a slick persona, he's the epitomie of bad***.

Red from Shawshank Redemption. Anytime Morgan Freeman acts in a film, the quality goes up. Shawshank is such a timeless film, it just couldn't possibly work the same without his character. His voice supplies the film with an incredible heart.

Lt. Vincent Hanna and Neil McCauley from Heat. Al Pacino's Hanna is the perfect "flawed hero" character. DeNiro's McCauley is the ultimate sociopathic foil to Pacino. Together, they work magic in my personal all-time favorite film. The ten minutes they share in the coffee shop is still one of the greatest exchanges of dialogue I've ever heard.

My head would explode if I tried to narrow it down to just one. There are SO MANY that are so cool.

Every character in True Romance mostly Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper, the exchange between them in the trailer was epic. ;-D

I have many to choose from but here are a couple of mine:

Lt. Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) from the Alien series. Her character was such a bad a** in all the movies, though I wasn't terrible impressed with Alien:Resurrection she was still tough as nails.

Indiana Jones - I've enjoyed just about every character Harrsion Ford has played, but Indiana Jones is probably his best.

All right, all right. :-b

3D really named off some good ones (especially Morgan Freeman in Shawshank!), so I put my thinking cap on and came up with these guys:

Tom Hanks in Lost. I have never been so captivated by one man on a screen, alone, for so long. I think that's an underrated performance. Truly great.

Speaking of Tom Hanks, let's try Forrest Gump. Funny, poignant, and always interesting. I could watch that movie over and over and over.

For "cool" there's Preacher from Pale Rider, and for just plain awesome there's William Munny from Unforgiven, to name a couple of Clint Eastwood characters. One more by Eastwood is Frank Horrigan in In the Line of Fire. I just feel comfortable with Eastwood on screen.

I'll come up with some more later. Like I said - there's tons.
