HISD Bans Backpacks For Final Days

POSTED: 6:31 pm CDT May 16, 2007
UPDATED: 12:19 pm CDT May 17, 2007

HOUSTON -- Some Houston Independent School District campuses are banning backpacks as the school year winds down, KPRC Local 2 reported Wednesday.

District officials said safety is a top priority. The last day of school is May 24.

A number of schools are banning backpacks on campus in the final days of classes to hold down the possibility that someone might try to bring a weapon onto campus, and to discourage kids from trying to slip water guns, silly string and other disruptive items into the school for last-day pranks, officials said.

This has been in effect in local schools in my area for a few years now. Kids can bring backpacks to school, but they can't use them during the school day, while class is in session. They get 5-10 minutes between classes to head out to their locker and switch books though.
The cake is a lie.

I'm kind of surprised that they're doing this in Texas, of all places.
Isn't the right to bear silly string there in the second amendment?

Yeah this is has been a rule in my district for a while now to (a few years atleast). I have no issues with it, and love the fact I am not tripping over backpacks while I walk around the room.
