Trading Draft Picks-commish input

Postby double barrel » Thu May 31, 2007 5:45 pm

One of my league members suggested an idea to put a twist in our league this season: Trading draft picks. We use a serpentine draft order, redraft every year. Any experience/comment on trading draft picks. For instance: I will trade you my first and tenth round picks for your second and third round picks. The NFL draft sure has alot of this. I use Yahoo and this option is not avalible though them. Is there another online provider that allows for trading draft picks?

Good Idea?

We have this option in our league and it has yet to be utilized in the past 7 years. No one wants to pay the price to move up in the first and no one wants to move down for less than an arm and a leg. And in later rounds, no one takes the time to propose/consider offers. But maybe your league will be more daring.

I have a league here at the cafe, it's a dynasty, we do an offline rookie draft and we've had so many trades this off-season including draft picks. Its really nice because it helps team really build how they want, whether focus on youth and try and trade older vets for some picks, or go for vets and win now and trade away picks for now talent, ect ect.

In re-draft leagues there is very little if any draft movement. I also wouldn't suggest being able to trade future draft picks in a re-draft league. For a dynasty or keeper it is fine but not re-draft. I see no issue in allowing it but it will probably rarely be used.

I've personally found it unbalancing for a league, but if you really want to incorporate pick-trading, the best way to do it is via messageboard or in-person, and then input the draft results to your FFSP (fantasy football service provider :) ) later. I've only played on Yahoo and Sportsline, and iirc neither of these provide pick-trading functionality for their live drafts.

I dont see the point of trading draft picks if you redraft every year! Using draft picks in trades are nice to help you build for the following year. but if your redrafting every year it is pointless. also you need to have the same group of guys returning each year or it becomes a real problem. I would stay away from it if I were you.

Actually, beginning last year, the commissioner was able to adjust the draft board based on trading draft picks. It was a new feature and worked very well, as I had three 1st round picks (R.Bush, J.Addai, and C.Palmer).

In redraft leagues, I wouldn't recommend it. In anything else (keeper/Dynasty), I believe it's an integral part of the league...

Actually on sportsline, you can draft picks using the site. You can't do it live once the draft has started, but you can use the site to trade them just like players once the site rolls outs for 2007. Our league allows trading of draft picks, but with limits during the season. You can only trade away 2 picks at most during the season. Anything can be traded during the off season. We did this because we didn't want to get into the problem of teams trying to mortgage their future to win now. So limiting them to giving up two picks helps keep everyone competitive year to year.
