My understanding is that this is a reasonably common way Italians drink wine. I'm not a fan of stemware, either. In fact, I just found some glasses that sound very similar to what you're describing for my wine consumption. You miss the aroma of the wine as you drink, but for me it's all about the flavor anyway.

stemless wineglasses are very in right now...although i'm pretty sure they used to just be called brandy snifters

The aroma of wine is what made me like it in the first place. Going to a vineyard and smelling the fermenting grapes in the barrels, just the whole atmosphere of wine and grape, was what did it for me. Half the attraction of wine is the aroma. It smells awesome. But I do agree - the taste is by far the most importan thing. I have sinus issues so I don't smell as well as some, anyway, which is why I go for the overgrown shot glasses.

These are more like the super-mini glasses diners would serve you OJ in for breakfast. You'd order an OJ and they'd bring this little shot-glass thing out and you'd be like, huh?
