ATLANTA Just a month before the start of training camp, the Atlanta Falcons have added a veteran safety net to their linebacker corps, signing unrestricted free agent Orlando Huff to a one-year contrac
The addition of Huff, whose resume includes 48 starts in six seasons, bolsters the depth and versatility at linebacker and gives the Falcons another solid special teams performer. It also provides Atlanta an experienced presence at weakside linebacker in the event that Demorrio Williams is not ready for the start of the season.

Williams, the projected starter on the weak side, suffered a torn pectoral muscle earlier this spring in a weightlifting accident. Coach Bobby Petrino said this week Williams is ahead of schedule in his rehabilitation and might be fully recovered by the opener. In the absence of Williams, rookie Stephen Nicholas, a fourth-round draft choice from South Florida, has been working with the starting defense.

Huff, 28, has played at all three linebacker spots during his six-year career. Hestarted 13 games for the Arizona Cardinals in 2006, registering 79 tackles.

A fourth-round pick of Seattle in the 2001 draft, Huff played four season for the Seahawks (2001-2004) before signing with the Cardinals as a free agent in 2005. In his first season in Arizona, he established a career high with 87 tackles.

The former Fresno State standout has 289 career tackles, three sacks, two interceptions, 12 passes defensed, five forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries in 87 appearances. He also has more than 30 tackles on special teams.

Financial details of the contract Huff signed were not available, but it is believed that the deal is near the league minimum.
