Second-year defensive tackle Fred Evans, who played sparingly as a rookie but is expected to assume a more meaningful role for the Miami Dolphins in 2007, was arrested early Saturday morning, and tasers were used to subdue him, after an alleged argument with a Miami Beach taxi driver.

A spokesperson for the Miami Beach police department on Saturday afternoon confirmed the arrest and said that Evans was charged with battery on a police officer, resisting arrest with violence, trespassing and disorderly conduct.

"We are aware that Fred Evans was arrested this morning," Dolphins' first-year coach Cam Cameron said in a statement released by the team. "We will not condone this type of behavior. I assure everyone it will be dealt with seriously."

Representatives for Evans could not be reached.

The police spokesman said that officers were summoned amid the reports of a verbal altercation between Evans and the driver of the cab. According to the police report, which does not detail the source of the argument, Evans refused to exit the taxi after police arrived and advised him he was being arrested.

When police attempted to restrain Evans with handcuffs, the report says that "a physical struggle" ensued, and police subsequently resorted to tasers.

According to the report, Evans bit one officer on the wrist and received several bruises, and a second officer suffered a bruised knee.

Evans, 23, was a seventh-round choice in the 2006 draft and signed a four-year, $1.67 million contract. The former Texas State-San Marcos standout appeared in only one game as a rookie, the season finale at Indianapolis, and registered two tackles.

But the Miami staff feels Evans, primarily a nose tackle, is a player of promise, and he was expected to have a significantly expanded role in the team's tackle rotation in 2007.
