If they did not think too highly of him, they would have brought SOMEONE in. And they would not have drafted him so early in the draft a few years ago. And they would not have let Thomas Jones go. Clearly, the Bears think Benson can handle the load, and I agree.

They did bring someone in. They used their third round pick in the draft on Garrett Wolfe. This is a guy that recorded 280 total yards against Ohio State last year. By your logic, the coaching staff isn't very high on Benson. I tend to agree. The real question is whether it is because of his consistent underperformance or his attitude problem.

Where were you in 2005? This guy got 80 carries (130 touches) and posted a ridiculous 5.1 rushing average that year.

He will absolutely challenge Benson for carries now that Thomas Jones is gone, and expect Wolfe, who has excellent hands, to get time in 3rd down situations. Since 2004 with Thomas Jones and Anthony Thomas (who got 139 touches that season), Lovie Smith has shown a propensity for RBBC.

Lastly, do you guys really think that Rex Grossman's ability will be enough to keep defenses from stacking the line against Benson/Peterson/Wolfe?

I wouldn't be too concerned about Peterson or Wolfe. THe coaching staff started to look Benson's way more and more often towards the end of the season, and once Benson found his groove he was running at 4.7 YPC. If they weren't sold on Benson, they probably would have tried to re-sign THomas Jones, or they would have taken a RB higher than they did with Wolfe. Wolfe's also the kind of guy that is obviously a 3rd down specialist, not the kind of guy that's going to challenge BEnson for a starting job or anything.

Having said that, it's not out of the question to think Peterson/Wolfe could still some time from Benson, but I think Benson will be the main guy, especially where it counts (at the goal line). I like Benson as a sleeper pick this year. The Bears got a pretty good O-line and a defense that keeps them in games and gives them good field position. You could do worse in the late 2nd or early 3rd.

Benson..the bears didn't chose him in the first round or trade T. Jones away to sit him on the bench.

If you get a shot at drafting Benson as a #2... he is a great option. Be like owners who drafted Priest Holmes handcuffed with LJ in 05 and draft Peterson as a backup and a great keeper!

Thought I read that the Bears never confirmed interest in Brown and all press on it was info from Brown's agent....dunno for sure

The Bears said that they gave as much interest in Chris Bown as they would have any other free agent. Everything else that came out before Brown re-signed with Tennessee was entirely fabricated by his agent.

Like its been mentioned, the only RB debate in Chicago right now is over who will get more 3rd down touches, Peterson or Wolfe. Personally, I think that AP will get most of them until the Bears figure out where Wolfe can do the most damage from. In any case, I didn't think Wolfe was drafted for RB depth, but for whatever offensive trickery the coaching staff can think of to put him and Hester into.
The cake is a lie.
