Troy Brown isn’t going anywhere.

According to league sources, the wide receiver has reached agreement on a one-year deal that will bring him back to New England for a 15th season - second in club history only to Steve Grogan’s 16 - and ensure that Mr. Patriot remains in Foxboro.

Brown, who turned 36 on July 2, has spent the last six months rehabbing his knee following surgery to repair a torn patellar tendon. Head coach Bill Belichick declared Brown in the team’s plans in March, but Brown first needed to prove to himself he was healthy enough to play.

The franchise’s all-time leading receiver has made that determination and will return, joining a crowd at wide receiver.

Offseason additions Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Donte Stallworth and Kelley Washington are part of a deep field that includes holdovers Reche Caldwell [stats] and Jabar Gaffney [stats], as well as Brown, the injured Chad Jackson, and longshots like Bam Childress and Kelvin Kight.

With the Pats likely to keep only five or six wideouts, Brown will battle Washington, Gaffney and Caldwell for the final two to three spots. Jackson, who underwent offseason knee surgery of his own, will probably start the year on the physically unable to perform list.

Brown has versatility on his side, given his ability to play defensive back in dime packages, as well as on special teams. He’s likely to lose reps in the slot, however, to Welker, a 26-year-old with a game remarkably similar to that of Brown’s younger days.

Brown is coming off his best season offensively since 2002, when hecaught 97 passes. He snagged 43 passes last year, including four touchdowns. He also surpassed Stanley Morgan for No. 1 on the team’s all-time receptions list, finishing the year with 557.
