I am not new to the forum, I just didn't have my password saved on this computer and couldn't remember it from my old username. Had over 1000 posts on my other name so forgive me for this being my first. Anyway, I've been commisioner of my league for a few years and every year the idea of divisions comes up in my league. Anyone who's used divisions in their league let me know if you think it's a good idea to do it or if I should avoid it all together. Thanks.
Typically 3 devitions of 4, for the average 12 team league. Play each team in your own devision twice and everyone else once. 6+8=14 season games plus 2 weeks for playoffs. One devision winner for all 3 devisions and one wildcard go to the playoffs.
The 10 team league Im in now has 2 devisions of 5. Play each team in your devision twice plus each other team once. 8+5=13 plus 2 weeks playoffs. One devision winner from each, and 2 wildcards(both wildcards can be from the same devision if their records support it).
If not done this way I can see how it would be rather random who you would play twice during the regular season. I dont think I'd like NOT having devisions.

I've played FF for years and I've never been in a league with divisions.
That setup you described with a 10-team league and 2 5 team divisions sounds very interesting. My only question is, how do you determine which teams are in each division?
If it's just done randomly, which I assume is how it would have to be done, I guess you could end up with some lopsided divisions, but hey that happens in the pros too. The use of the 2 wildcards would ensure that the top 4 teams still made the playoffs. (ok I just answered my own question, thanks)
You still have to come up with tie breakers if records are the same for 3 people fighting over the wildward spots....
We have kindof an interesting way of setting up the playoffs, as far as the next years drafting order. Take a look. Sorry about all the quotes, this site would not allow me to leave several spaces.
The playoffs will be held during the 14th and 15th week of the NFL regular season. The two division winners qualify along with two wildcard teams. The wildcard teams will be the next two teams with the best win/loss record. In the event of a tie for the Division Title, Division Record will be used first, head to head record will be used second, and if needed total points scored third. In the event there is a tie for Wild Card position, Head to Head will be used first, and Total Points second. The number one seed will play the 4th seed and the number two seed will play the third seed on week 14. The winners of those two games will meet for the League Championship on week 15 and the losers will play in the consolation game to determine who gets third and fourth place. In this game the winner will get the better draft pick the following year.
CONSOLATION BOWL:
The Consolation Bowl will be held during weeks 14 through 16 of the NFL regular season. The 9th and 10th seeded teams will receive a bye week for the first round during week 14. During the first round of the Consolation Bowl, seeded teams 5th and 6th will play each other along with 7th and 8th. The winner of the 5 and 6 seed game will go on to play the 9th seed, and the winner of the 7 and 8 seed match will play the 10th seed. The winner of those two games will play for the Consolation Championship and the #1 pick in next years Draft. This bracket is a little unusual but it is designed to give the lower seeded teams the best possible advantage. In addition, it will discourage any team from "throwing" a game in order to recieve a better pick the following year. All wins are rewarded with a better pick except the Fantasy Champ.

We have 10 teams w/ 2 divisions. You play everyone in you division twice and the other division once. 6 teams make the playoffs. Playoffs start week 14, division winners get a bye, other 4 teams play and so on. Done in week 16. We use CBS sportsline and divide the divisions based on power rankings at the end of the season. You could also use even/odd teams based on finish at the end of the year. 10 teams works really well for divisions.
I like both Uscgmark and heelfan's setups, both different, but good, pros and cons.
In Uscgmark's that is a short playoff, but makes it tough and I don't believe in having half the league make the playoffs.
Heelfan's somewhat compenstates for the large amount of teams making the playoffs by giving the first round bye.
For me personally, I think that total points and power rankings are a much better gauge of who has the best team than winning record ever is. I've seen guys with great teams just have bad luck and get beat 4 weeks in a row by teams who had the high weekly score that week, but normally had a very pedestrian team.
I don't think my league would go for it though and most people like the fun of the rivalries and trash talking that comes with head to head play, but I don't think it's a good gauge of who has the best team and that's what everyone really wants to know.
I'd like to look into a site that allows old school rotiserie scoring.
