I'd just like to remind everyone that this is a thread to tribute the good dogs of the world. Lets not get too far off topic. If people want to discuss Vick, that's fine, but a new thread should probably be made.
My wife always wanted saddlebags for him so she could make him carry stuff back from the local corner store when she takes them out for a walk... Figure that pack could handle a couple bottles of Diet Pepsi Met?
Some dogs, or dog breeds, naturally take to carrying small loads or carts, but most need to be trained not to fear them or be uncomfortable. I'd have your dog wear it around the house empty to get used to it, like a horse's saddle, then slowly begin adding weight. Don't stress him about it or he will likely associate the two things.
I agree with what Omaha said, make sure to get your dog used to it first by wearing it empty for a bit. In fact the bag I have breaks down into two pieces, 1 is the actual bags and the other is kinda like a saddle. Maybe just have Diesel wear the saddle part around first. Ginger doesn't mind wearing hers one bit, as you can see in the pic. She's carried all kinds of things, mostly just her stuff, like food, water, toys, doo doo bags, and whatnot. I have had her carry stuff for us too but nothing too heavy, like keys, wallet, cell phones, water bottles, stuff like that when we hike. I had her carry a couple beers for me one time when we walked down to the river, it sounded like a great idea. However I didn't account for her shaking them around on the walk.
Yeah lmcjaho you could probably fit a couple bottles of soda in it. Are you thinking 2 litters? That might be a little too heavy though, guess it would depend on how far you're walking too. Also I always try to balance Ginger out. You can probably find the saddle bags at most pet stores. I got Gingers at either Pet Smart or Pet-Co.

Well, I was thinking a 2-Liter on each side, so it's balanced. That would work out to about 4.5lbs per side. Considering Diesel weighs in at a whopping 126lbs+ (the + because I think he's put on weight since last vet visit) I'm pretty sure the weight wouldn't be too big a deal for him once he got used to it. The store is about 4 or 5 blocks from the house, so not too far...
I'm probably going to take a look at the local pet places when I come home from my trip next week - I'll let you know how it turns out...
