Drafting future NFL stars now?!?!

Postby matttyl315 » Wed Aug 01, 2007 11:16 am

My dynasty league is starting a brand new concept this year, just to see how it will really work. We are having a "rookie only" draft in a few weeks (right before the regular season starts), but we will also include future NFL stars (anyone we want to draft).

There are a few things to consider, though. We have a 31 man roster (which includes IDP), and we will have 3 extra "practice squad" spots. These practice squad players don't count against your 31 man roster, and can only be 2007 NFL rookies drafted in this upcoming draft. These players can't be used as starters, unless they are moved from practice squad to the regular 31 man roster, and then you have to release another player to make room for them. At that point, you will only have 2 guys on your practice roster, as no one can be placed there after the start of the season. All 3 can stay there all season, though, if you don't need them to be a starter, which would give you 34 total players.

What we are starting this year is the ability to draft future NFL players, really anyone you want, be it college stars, high school stars, or whoever. These players, though, can not be placed on the practice squad, and would thus have to take up one of the 31 normal roster spots all season. If you end up dropping them for some reason, no one can pick them back up till next years "rookie only" draft.

All that being said, what players would be worth picking up now, not knowing when they will come out till the NFL with 100% certainty, taking all the risks of injury over the next year or 2, and not knowing what NFL team will end up drafting them. I'm much more into the NFL than I am into college ball, so any help out there would be great. Who's still in college who will be a huge hit in the NFL in another year or two, and then where (roughly) would you rank them with this year's rookie class knowing that they would have to use a regular roster spot all year and not one of the "practice squad" spots?

We start 14 players weekly, 1 qb, 1 rb, 2 wr, 2 flex, 1 te, 1 k, 2 lb, 2 dl, 2 db - so we have 17 "bench spots". Thanks for any help you might have.

QB Brian Brohm is supposed to be the next great QB. Not sure when he's eligible for the draft though. ALso, Texas WR Limas Sweed will likely be the top WR drafted when he is drafted. Other than that, I don't know. NOt too big into college ball either. http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com should have some interesting info though.

Is he worth getting now, and if so, where in the rookie draft?

I'd probably take him 6th or so, after AD, Lynch, CJ, Bush, and Jackson. He's extremely talented and should be a Top 10 pick. Some have compared him to Adrian Peterson.

Other big-time RB's should be Steve Slaton (West Virginia) and Ray Rice (Rutgers). I'd keep an eye on them along with WR's Desean Jackson (California), Limas Sweed (Texas) and Mario Manningham (Michigan).

I'd take most of this year's crop of rookie wideouts before that group though.

Basically it varies year to year, but most drafts have a strength (usually very deep in the position), this year was wide-outs, last year it was Quarterbacks, and next year it seems to be Running backs.

Beyond this years rookies, here is a list of the top skill position players in college football by projected draft class, for the most part everyone is projected to leave at the end of their junior year:

Next year:
Darren McFadden - RB
Jonathon Stewart - RB
Desean Jackson - WR
Mario Manningham - WR
Limas Sweed - WR

2 years from now:
CJ Spiller - RB
Chris Wells - RB
Percy Harvin - RB/WR
Patrick Turner - WR
Michael Goodson - RB
Matthew Stafford - QB
Benjamin Tate - RB

3 years from now (incoming freshmen):
Joe McKnight - RB
Ryan Mallett - QB
Noel Devine - RB
Enrique Davis - RB
Ronald Johnson - WR
Arrellious Benn - WR

4+ years from now (top HS players):
Darrell Scott - RB
Terrelle Pryor - QB
Julio Jones - WR
AJ Green - WR
Jeremie Calhoun - RB
Sam McGuffie - RB
Bryce Brown - RB

Personally I would focus on the 1st two groups of players in addition to Peterson, Calvin Johnson and Marshawn Lynch.
