The "RB Theory" Article

Postby iamthedominator » Tue Aug 07, 2007 7:41 pm

This is my second year with a fantasy football team and last year I took a running back with my top 2 picks. I read an article on your web site and it said if you think a QB is the right pick then go for it. So now I am unsure whether or not to reach for a QB/WR. What do you guys think?

P.S. I came in 1st place in my league last year.

I guess it really depends on how your league is setup. If QBs get 6 points per touchdown, then I think taking a QB in the first two rounds is justifiable. But I think only a handful of quarterbacks qualify to be drafted that highly -- Peyton Manning, Carson Palmer, Tom Brady and Drew Brees. Marc Bulger is a fringe guy, and if Donovan McNabb were coming into this season healthy he might be the second QB taken.

Like I said, I think it depends on the scoring system in the league. Obviously, if quarterbacks only receive four points (or less) per passing touchdown then there is no way I can see anyone taking a QB in the first two rounds, save maybe Peyton Manning.

I still think taking two RBs is the way to go. If you get a guy like LT or Steven Jackson this year, though, you could take a QB with your second round pick and be OK, because you would have the turn-around in a serpentine draft to grab RB2. Any other RB, though, I would try and get RB2 in the second round.

Don't you think last year's first place finish has something to do with those two top running backs that you picked up in the first two rounds? If you reach for a qb or receiver, there won't be many good rbs left by the time you get your chance in round three.

If you're taking 2 running backs in the first 2 rounds, you shouldn't take a quarterback until the fourth or fifth round at earliest. Manning will go in the second, and everyone else in that top tier should go in the late fourth or throughout the fifth round. If you want an elite quarterback, then you can take one in the fourth round, but earlier than that is a loss of value.
