Just Drafted (newbie)...Is this team a legit playoff contend

Postby FirstAnd99 » Thu Aug 23, 2007 1:33 pm

Alright. First draft ever for me, 6th pick out of 12 teams. Been lurking for a while and studying the magazines to prepare for this draft.
Regular Rules...6pt/rec and rush td; 1 pt/25 pass yds and 1 pt/10 rush. no ppr.
Twelve teams, 14 round draft. I think I have a pretty good team, what do you guys think?

QB: Tony Romo
RB: Larry Johnson
RB: Ronnie Brown
WR: Steve Smith
WR: Anquan Boldin
WR: Troy Williamson
TE: Vernon Davis
K: David Akers
DST: Saints

Backups

QB: Matt Leinart
RB: Marshawn Lynch
RB: Brandon Jackson
WR: Devery Henderson
WR: Brandon Marshall

My 3rd WR is kinda iffy I think. I didnt notice that we needed 3 WR to start. I thought it was a league where you could have either a WR or RB start (flex?? i think it's called). My def. is iffy too, I took them in the last round. There my have been better options, but I mainly picked them b/c of their schedule this year, it looked a little weak to me. Anyways, what do you think?? I'll check out your team if you leave a link.

For a new fantasy manager, I think you did very well. And, since I'm high on Marshall being a stud WR this season, I don't think you're as weak at the #3 WR spot as you suggest. Good job and good luck.
Thank God for Football Season.

Thanks LaTraffic. I have also read some really good things about Marshall. I got him in the 13th round!! I was going to take him earlier, but I knew that the other people in my league didn't study up like I did and I highly doubt they even knew who he was, so Im glad I waited. I think I got very very good value for him...now all he needs to do is be the stud we think he can be!! If nobody pans out at that 3rd WR spot I figure I can probably trade one of my bench RBs once everyone finds out who they are later on in the season.

Solid QB's in Romo & Leinart; really good at RB with LJ, Brown & Lynch, and Jackson could work out nicely too; Smith & Boldin are really good WR"S, and Henderson & Marshall should be pretty solid, and Willamson is a bit of a sleeper who may surprise this year - he worked in the off-season to improve; Davis should be a top TE this season; and yeh, defence is your only weakness - what other D's are available on the WW?

There's a lot of defenses left. Some of the top rated d's according to cbs sportsline that are on the WW are: Packers, Raiders, Bills, Panthers, Cowboys, Chiefs.
Im thinking about picking up the Packers, but I'll probably rotate the d's on the WW throughout the
year according to the matchups for the week.

If you notice, in round 7 I took Vernon Davis over Kellen Winslow. That was one of my tougher decisions, clock ticked down to about 5 seconds before I finally pulled the trigger. What do you guys think about that pick? Should I have gone for Winslow instead?

People are predicting good things from a Wade Phillips defence in big D, and GB was solid last year and should be as good this year or better - I would definitely drop N.O. and grab either Dallas or GB!! Both of those could quite likely be top 10 D's.

Most people prob have Winslow ranked higher, but there's also a lot of people predicting a big breakout season for Davis, so I think you did fine there.

Definatly a good team for a beginner. That being said, no matter how good your draft is, leagues aren't won on draft days (although they can be lost which isn't the case with your team). You definatly have a good enough team that, with some good moves during the season, can contend.
