It's the newer companies way of making their technology seem better. The fact is that most/all digital cable companies worth anything all have fiber optic cable. Most of the new technology is just a more direct connect to your home.

I've had it for 6 years and I live in Canada and we get some pretty nasty weather here - also the area where I live gets some pretty nasty winds. In all that time I've only had one problem where the dish needed to be re-alligned slightly because of the wind, and even then I could still watch it, some channels were just a little fuzzy. The small eliptical dishes they use now don't seem to be affected much by severe weather.
I rarely see anyone say that. It's usually more of a clear view of the SW sky. Another issue that I see people having is that they get their dish installed in the fall/winter. Once those trees grow out, they could lose their view.

It was only mentioned once here, but in a thread we had last year there were a few people who brought it up. I just thought it kind of odd since it doesn't seem to be problem up here with our wicked weather.

I know I had a friend about 3-4 years ago and they had satellite TV and Internet and when we would have our West Texas windstorms it would get really fuzzy and the internet would basically quit working all together. However, I don't know how much stuff has changed over the last few years either.
I have comcast, can't stand them. the bill is always higher than they say it will be, and they offer throw-ins to keep me as a customer and then don't deliver them. I called AT&T a week or so ago, they said that fiber optic is not available in my neighborhood yet, and that they'd send someone out to my residence to see what kind of internet service they could provide me. I called back today, spent 25 minutes on the phone, and they had no record of my prior conversation. Is that what can be expected from U-Verse? Comcast is bad, but I don't wanna ditch them for other service that is just as bad.

The short answer is that they all suck. Odd that they have no record of speaking with you because they all want new customers before they screw them over. Not completely surprising, though, because most companies have no way to record that information unless there is an account/address to tie it to. If you are cool with the Comcast service but hate the bill, don't be afraid to call and ask for the retention department. They have special offers that no one else can offer. Just make sure that they actually show up on your bill. Don't be afraid to mention that you will be switching over to satellite even if you have no plans to.

That's the thing. The retentions department promises "with these new discounts, your monthly bill will be $82 for cable and internet, and we're throwing in free HBO for a year." Then the bill that shows up is actually $115, and HBO never materializes, and when I call to ask about it, they have no record that I was ever told that they'd do that. Frustrating.
I'm having crazy thoughts, like dropping cable for a few months over the summer. Pick it back up in whatever form in time for college (and hopefully pro) football season.

Personally, I would just make sure that you have the package that you are told you are getting but make sure that you read your bill. Many customers have amnesia. All they remember is the $99 package they are getting and they forget the DVR, 2 extra boxes, taxes, etc. I also know that the first month after changing your package causes a lot of confusion on your bill due to prorating. Make sure that you read your bill over before causing a stink.
If you do cancel for a short time, is there anyone else in the house that can get it in their name?? You can save a lot of money that way, especially if you can somehow get in touch with the local Direct Sales department. That's where I used to work and we had the best offers available for new customers (where retention has the best offers for current customers).
