Oklahoma officials said they'd been told Tuesday by the NCAA that the money raised by Fineberg would constitute illegal financial assistance under NCAA rules, because Mitchell's brother is a sophomore football player at Westfield and Fineberg is considered to be an Oklahoma booster.
It's due to the brother playing football for the same high school. Could look like "the college" (even though it's a booster) is raising money for the funeral with the intent of "buying" his younger brother to play for them. Nowadays, with lawsuits for tampering and all of that being tossed around like candy, the college has to be careful in this spot, and you can't blame them.
I do think what the booster is doing is cool though, and I hope the waiver goes through without any problems.
And RIP.
