Y! Sports Blog Funston League - draft results

Postby Gibbs_Wagon » Fri Aug 31, 2007 10:09 am

Funston's blog League drafted last night. 14 Teams, and he managed to net the 14th pick in his own league. I'm not sure if they made the league public yet, but if it is... Here's the league link.

Here's the team Funston ended up with:
1. (14) Maurice Jones-Drew
2. (15) Brandon Jacobs
3. (42) Roy Williams
4. (43) Lee Evans
5. (70) Jerricho Cotchery
6. (71) Brandon Jackson
7. (98) Jay Cutler
8. (99) Vernand Morency
9. (126) Reuben Droughns
10. (127) Ronald Curry
11. (154) Jeff Garcia
12. (155) Jacoby Jones
13. (182) Bo Scaife
14. (183) Carolina
15. (210) Demetrius Williams

Everybody is going to have RB issues in a 14 team league, so can't fault him too much there. I do think MJD is a bit of a crap shoot, especially in a non-ppr. Funston was notably bitter about having to draft Cutler, and he was the 13th qb taken. He was half trying (where appropriate) to nab all players named Brandon, though he only got 2.

My team:
1. (4) Frank Gore
2. (25) Reggie Wayne
3. (32) Torry Holt
4. (53) Plaxico Burress
5. (60) Todd Heap
6. (81) LaMont Jordan
7. (88) Warrick Dunn
8. (109) Matt Leinart
9. (116) Alex Smith
10. (137) Brian Leonard
11. (144) Dominic Rhodes
12. (165) Jesse Chatman
13. (172) Pittsburgh
14. (193) Shayne Graham
15. (200) Amani Toomer

I'm in serious trouble with my Rb 2, but there were no RB's worth drafting when Wayne and Holt came to me imo . Holt's knee issues kept him from going till the 3rd (remember, 14 teams here). I like my starting WR's as probably the strongest in the division, but will likely play matchups with my qb and 2nd rb. Sadly, I had to bail early, so from 12 on I was on auto draft. Might have reached a bit for Todd Heap and Alex Smith, but didn't know what slop would fall to me at my next pick. As it turned out, I should have waited for the TE. My bench wr's will have to be improved via the WW.

The only other cafe member that publicly announced his membership was Swiper... and here's his team:
1. (5) Joseph Addai
2. (24) Chad Johnson
3. (33) Drew Brees
4. (52) Marion Barber III
5. (61) Deion Branch
6. (80) Greg Jennings
7. (89) Jeremy Shockey
8. (108) Drew Bennett
9. (117) Jacksonville
10. (136) J.P. Losman
11. (145) T.J. Duckett
12. (164) Tony Hunt
13. (173) Matt Stover
14. (192) Oakland
15. (201) Tony Scheffler

At the time, I thought Swiper was going to pay for his Drew Brees pick, but he managed to nab Barber at 4 giving him a fairly solid rb core. It looks like his WR's are not the strongest of the bunch, but wr's are more easily correctable than RB's via the WW.

Yeah, it looks like you and Swiper lucked out with the top 5 picks. I would think anyone that was able to get one good RB in this league is at a huge advantage from the get-go. Also, I like Swiper's Brees pick, especially if it's 6 pts per passing TD. When no one has good RBs, you need to get point separation from another source, and a stud QB can be that source.

Here's my team. I picked 13th and did not like it at all. I thought about going WR/WR, but decided against it. I do like my team though.
I think my 5th round pick of Chambers (69th overall), 6th round pick of Julius Jones (72nd overall), and 7th round pick of Rivers (97th overall) offered awesome value and really made my draft a good one (at least IMO). I KILLED Funston with the Rivers pick. He really wanted him with the next pick.

1. Steve Smith
2. Reggie Bush
3. Javon Walker
4. Carnell Williams
5. Chris Chambers
6. Julius Jones
7. Philip Rivers
8. Jerry Porter
9. Brandon Jones
10. Matt Jones
11. Anthony Thomas
12. Mike Bell
13. Randy McMichael
14. Steve McNair
15. Jason Hanson

For a starting lineup of...

QB: Philip Rivers
RB: Reggie Bush
RB: Carnell Williams
WR: Steve Smith
WR: Javon Walker
WR: Chris Chambers
TE: Randy McMichael
K: Jason Hanson
D/ST: None Yet

What do ya guys think?

Here's my team.
1. (2) Steven Jackson RB
2. (27) Marshawn Lynch RB
3. (30) Baltimore DEF
4. (55) Reggie Brown WR
5. (58) Laveranues Coles WR
6. (83) DeAngelo Williams RB
7. (86) Eli Manning QB
8. (111) Kevin Jones RB
9. (114) Jason Witten TE
10. (139) Chris Henry RB
11. (142) Eddie Kennison WR
12. (167) Troy Williamson WR
13. (170) Arnaz Battle WR
14. (195) Neil Rackers K
15. (198) Joey Harrington QB

Let me save a little face here and say that I did not draft this team. I was going to take half a day off work, but then my wife offered to draft for me. So I set up my rankings, did a couple drafts in public leagues to show her how to do it, and told her she could call if she needed to . I left instructions to just pick the highest player in my rankings, to draft a kicker in round 14, and to draft a defense in round 13 if she hadn't drafted one yet. She read the 13 as a 3, and hence I get Baltimore as my 3rd round pick. Also I had Lynch as number 35 in my rankings, so I'm not sure why she drafted him with the 2nd round pick. If she had just went according to my rankings, I would have gotten Holt in the 2nd and Gates in the 3rd. Oh well. (Chris Henry was my mistake, accidentally moved him up the night before, meant to move up Chris Brown).

Well, like the rest of us, your RB's could be stronger - at least you're not starting L. Jordan. Your wr's are strong, the qb is solid, and McMichael is a nice late round TE to pick up. I think J. Jones as a 3rd RB is great for this league. Defense matchups might prove difficult with several cafe members in the league, and it being a large group, that might hurt.

HA! Everyone was so confused by that. Funston said something like "And he stays quiet about that unbelievable pick." It all makes sense now though.

LOL. I think I made a crack about the Baltimore pick too. All in good fun though. :-)

Brees I did take a little earlier than I would have liked but in a 14 team league, I didn't want to be in a QB bind missing a run. I've patterned myself in the drafts this year to try to get a top 6 QB. And I think I have in all but one. So we will see how it works out. I was eyeing Barber and glad that worked out ok. If Holt made it to me in the 3rd I likely would have gone there over Brees though.

The pick I regret was Duckett. At that point I didn't think KJ would be off the PUP list, and with Tatum dinged up already a little thought that might be a nice payoff for a late pick. Oh well. Time will tell.

That may not turn out so bad, though. Duck is still a Goal-Line specialist and he could see a lot of action down there with KJ not 100% and Bell looking ineffective. You could get some decent TDs from him this year (assuming, of course, that the Lions actually find the End Zone this year).

I think the Lion's problem is not finding the endzone on offense so much as it is the defense letting them onto the field. :-b The Lions are set at the skill positions, and their line is the only thing that can hamper their proficiency IMO.

Nice drafts everybody. I now know how hairy things can get drafting 14th out of 14, and it looks like Funston did pretty much what I did, except I would have picked up Bush since he was apparently still available.
