..this year. How possible is that? I know they got AJ Hawk, Al Harris, and KJB. Anyway, the reason why Hodge said the Packers will be top 5 def this year is because they're physical. They always press the receivers .. something like that.
btw, does anyone know if plindsey gonna do defensive rankings this year?
Well you also have to ask what he is ranking defense by? Is it overall scoring? yards allowed? who knows. I think they are starting to fly around and play with a lot more confidence. their secondary has an aging charles woodson, Al Harris and rook frank Walker. That might not be the best in the business, but it sure isn't horrible. Harris and Woodson are two experienced veteran leaders and Walker is good young guy to bring in for nickle packages. Nick Collins has another year under his belt at safety as well.
As for fantasy purposes, you gotta like KGB and Kampman on the line. Hawk and Barnett at LB are a very nice duo-Barnett is very active all over the field. The secondary as mentioned above is solid, not flashy that should be more consistent this season. Overall, I think the Pack can be a top 10 fantasy D this season. Look at their schedule and they play a lot of young inexperienced QBs or older mediocre veterans (Bulger being an exception).
Their front is very good, and though woodson might be overrated their secondary can still get picks for you. Also, consider that they play tavaris jackson and rex grossman twice a year, so the packers should be a good defense for fantasy purposes.
Thanks to deluxe_247 for sig, he is welcome to sail with the Captain too! I will win all of the fantasy cafe games.....next year
Ok, so we've got what I hope will be the best overall D-line in the NFC. It will be hard to be the best, but I think we've got the talent. KGB is no longer a starter and is our pass rush specialist on pass downs. Cullen Jenkins is going to be a force in his place and will probably move inside to DT on pass downs. Kampman is steady and is coming off a 15.5 sack year. We've got a plethora of DTs and Pickett is a force against the run. Corey Williams can rush the passer from DT, and Johnny Jolly is our X-factor since he's now the starter (at least this week).
What hodge was talking about was how we play bump and run coverage and man defense with our linebackers. That is physical defense, even against the pass. If our safety play improves (the weak link, and I mean really weak, Manuel was cut) we should have a good secondary since I think we have a corner duo which rivals Champ and Dre Bly. Al Harris and Woodson are savvy and know when to take a chance to jump a route in hopes of an INT. At linebacker we've got two studs in Barnett and Hawk, and while Poppinga is more of a run stuffer, he has shown a little improvement in pass coverage.
We're gonna pressure the passer, but also pressure every player on the team with a physical presence D.
ADMIN edit: please note that the overall sig limit is 12k - thanks! (Thanks Leber) AIM is like multiplayer notepad
Kampman and Jenkens are two solid DE's. Whenever you can generate pressure on the QB like they can it will help cover up a weak secondary. Harris is solid and Woodson seems to be playing better.
Hodge is an idiot when it comes to making any type of statistical analysis. He can break down tape, but do not use anything this guy says for fantasy purposes. He is constantly touting backup RBs and fullbacks to be "impact" players.
The Packers still will give up too many big plays to be a top defense. They should be better than average, but they'll give up plenty of yards and points. Especially in the passing game.
Plus, Al Harris getting injured scared the crap out of me. It is a reminder that we are one secondary player injury away from being downright awful.
