Belichick Cheating With Video Since Browns Days?
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports Steelers assistant coaches said privately that New England Patriots HC Bill Belichick has illegally used cameras to spy on opposing coaches flashing signals from the sideline for years, even when he was coach of the Cleveland Browns. The NFL has confiscated a video camera and its contents from a Patriots employee who was standing on the sideline during New England's victory against the New York Jets Sunday, recording hand signals by Jets coaches, according to an ESPN report. The Patriots reportedly were warned about a previous use of a camera in a similar situation in Green Bay after the Packers escorted the cameraman from the field. A Boston Globe report also said the Buffalo Bills complained that the Patriots used a camera in a game against them last year. Steelers coaches, who asked not to be identified, have suspected for a long time that the Patriots used such a device to gain an illegal advantage, although they did not file a complaint with the league. One assistant said the Steelers changed their defensive signals whenever they played against New England because of their suspicions. New Steelers HC Mike Tomlin did not outright accuse New England of cheating, but said that the rumors have been around and "where there is smoke, there's fire." Tomlin, at his press conference yesterday, responded to the allegations that the Patriots have used cameras illegally to focus on opposing coaches along the sideline in order to steal their signals. "You hear rumors of things of that nature. It's nothing new. In terms of confirming it, it's never been confirmed in any instance to my knowledge. But usually where there is smoke, there's fire. Those rumors are founded on something. So it's not totally shocking, no."

Very interesting but the Browns didn't really need to cheat under Belichick anyway.

This pisses me off. NO - nobody else has done this. Certainly not in a manner that involved video recordings and archiving them to a database for analysis. Secondly, they (coaches) put the playbook over their mouth to disguise the play out of being sensible and cautious like you lock your car when you leave it in the parking lot - that does not somehow mean that everyone is a car thief. Thirdly, you clearly do not understand the situation because you are referring to disguising OFFENSIVE PLAYS and NOT defensive plays (which is what this is all about). The coaches don't get their offensive plays read because they can communicate to the QB in the huddle via microphone - not so on defense. The Patriots are accused of stealing defensive signals due to the lack of a microphone for the MLB.

You are clearly a Patriots fan, or a moron. :-t

you're both wrong about them covering their mouths with playbooks. they do it so their voice and not the background/crowd noise gets transmitted.

Or perhaps the biggest fraud in sports history. Seriously, put your team allegiance aside for a moment. What if The Dallas dynasty was caught cheating a year or two after winning the superbowl, or the 49ers under Joe Montana? Would you still assume they didn't cheat to win and give them full credit for their accomplishments? Or would you wonder whether or not they truly deserved such accolades.

I think we all know the answer, not that you'd admit it in your blind homerism. Your initial logic is that everyone does it. Really? You have proof? Like to show me one instance of the NFL knowing that another team did precisely what the Pats are accused of and not getting punished for it? Please, provide proof, otherwise you're full of it.

Seeing how logic failed you, you then instead of defending, either proving that every else does it, or that the Pats didn't cheat, just claim its better to be a fan of them anyway. Really? Its better to be a fan of cheaters? Is that honestly your defense? I suppose those SanFran fans can take just as much pride in cheering Barry Bonds as the old time Yankee fans did with Babe Ruth? Any proud Chicago Black Sox fans, ever? If you honestly believe any accomplishment achieved by cheating is worth squat, I might actually feel sorry for you.

I'm sure that lipreading is a part of the equation. Regardless, there is a big difference between trying to read lips and having someone videotape it.

The pats cheated plain and simple. And now one of "the greatest dynasties in the history of football" is in question. If what Tomlin is saying is true Belicheat could be in for a world of hurt. Since the Browns era? Do you realize how long that is?

No other team has ever been accused of this. To me that dynasty goes out the window if there is indeed a rule against it.
