Fantasy Football Rookie - Roster Help!

Postby rmfc07 » Tue Sep 18, 2007 5:46 pm

Hi Fantasy Gurus!

I am sorry this is going to be a bit huge.

This is the first time I am playing fantasy football. It is a 14 team league and it's for a prize money. I neither had any idea nor had any time to spend on learning how to draft. I didn't even spend time in reading the scoring rules in the league. The commish didn't change some of the rules before the draft either. So, they remained as is. Following are those rules:

Passing Yards (50 yards per point; 5 points at 300 yards; 6 points at 400 yards) / Passing Touchdowns (6) / Interceptions (-2)
Rushing Yards (20 yards per point; 5 points at 200 yards; 6 points at 250 yards) / Rushing Touchdowns (6)
Reception Yards (20 yards per point; 5 points at 200 yards; 6 points at 250 yards) / Reception Touchdowns (6)
Return Yards (10 yards per point; 1 points at 10 yards) / Return Touchdowns (6)
2-Point Conversions (2) / Fumbles Lost (-2) / Offensive Fumble Return TD (6)
Field Goals 0-19Yards (3) / Field Goals 20-29Yards (3) / Field Goals 30-39Yards (3) / Field Goals 40-49Yards (4) / Field Goals 50+ Yards (5)
FieldGoals Missed 0-19Yards(-1) / FieldGoals Missed 20-29Yards(-1) / FieldGoals Missed 30-39Yards(0) / FieldGoals Missed 40-49Yards(0)
Field Goals Missed 50+ Yards (0)
Point After Attempt Made (1) / Point After Attempt Missed (-1)
Sack (1) / Interception (2) / Fumble Recovery (2) / Touchdown (6) / Safety (2) / Block Kick (2) / Kickoff and Punt Return Touchdowns (6)
Points Allowed 0 points (12) / Points Allowed 1-6 points (7) / Points Allowed 7-13 points (4) / Points Allowed 14-20 points (1)
Points Allowed 21-27 points (0) / Points Allowed 28-34 points (-1) / Points Allowed 35+ points (-4)
Tackle Solo (1) / Sack (1) / Interception (1) / Fumble Recovery (1) / Touchdown (6) / Safety (2)

Roster Postions: QB, WR, WR, RB, RB, TE, W/R, K, DB, DL, DEF, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN

So, the KR/PR guys make more points than anyone else. My drafting didn't go well. But, after some waiver steals.. this is my current roster.

QB - Tony Romo
WR - Marvin Harrison, Vincent Jackson, Nate Burleson(PR and Receiver for the Seahawks), Jacoby Jones, Yamon Figurs(rookie KR/PR for the Ravens)
RB - LeDainian Tomlinson, Derrick Ward, Chris Brown, Ladell Betts, Chester Taylor, Correll Buckhalter(KR for the Eagles)
TE - Owen Daniels
K - Robbie Gould
DB - Tramon Williams (KR for the Packers)
DL - Antonio Pierce
DEF - Baltimore

On waiver wire - Philip Rivers(just got cut), Kevin Jones, Brandon Jackson, Devery Henderson, D.J. Hackett, Brandon Marshall, Marty Brooker, Troy Williamson etc.

My record is currently 1-1. Next week my team's matched up against the commish. His team is filled with top returners like Tedd Ginn Jr, Roscoe Parrish, Reggie Bush, Maurice Hicks, Allen Rossum in his starting lineup. I got beat this past weekenbd with a team similar like his with top returners like Dante Hall, Jerome Mathis, Maurice Jones-Drew, Ahmad Bradshaw, and Terrence McGee. I hated losing last weekend caused mainly cuz of all these returners (1 point per 10 yards return) and cuz LT sucked and cuz the returners I had in my starting lineup didnt return anything (and hence got cut) and cuz Brandon Jackson (my starter) sucked 2 weeks in a row (and hence got cut) and mainly cuz I hate losing in general.

Who do you gurus think should be in my starting lineup this coming weekend?? Please advice!

Thanks a lot in advance!
Dan.

Interesting twist to the league. Interesting that you paid money for something yet didn't read the fine print. I may have some stock options to sell you... :-b

But seriously, you've got the right idea now and have helped yourself by digging up the few remaining KR/PR guys out there on the wire. I'll assume the big stars at this are LONG gone. You're going to have to keep to traditional logic 80% of the time and then throw in some KR/PR guys to meet that heavily favored category for return yards.

If it was me, I'd set 'em like this --

QB - Tony Romo
WR - Marvin Harrison, Nate Burleson, Yamon Figurs
RB - LeDainian Tomlinson, Derrick Ward (sorry but Correll Buckhalter is not a good return guy & on a team with poor special teams)
TE - Owen Daniels
K - Robbie Gould
DB - Tramon Williams
DL - Antonio Pierce
DEF - Baltimore
Thank God for Football Season.

Thanks a lot latraffic! That was my ideal line-up for the coming weekend. And yes, you are right. Every STUD returner is already taken.
Ellis Hobbs, BJ Sams, Justin Miller (Sams and Miller are out for the season), Chris Carr, Terrence McGee, Allen Rossum, Dante Hall, Eddie Drummond, Tedd Ginn Jr, Devin Hester, Joshua Cribbs, Rock Cartwright, Leon Washington, Antwaan Randle El, Jerome Mathis, Ahmad Bradshaw, etc. - all are gone! :~(

I may be playing FF for the first time but I have learnt a lot about it and very quickly too(but after the draft ofcourse ;-7 ). :-)

I have another question too. I just picked up Philip Rivers from WW (someone gave up on him) and he is playing at GB this coming weekend while Romo will be playing at Chicago. Who do you think shoould start?

Josh McCown (vs Cleveland) and Steve McNair(vs AZ) are also on the WW.

Thanks!
