I always thought it was the team's mascot. They bring that freakin' pile of twigs to every volleyball match (including last season's Title Match where my Huskers trounced the Cardinal).

They're weirdos. Plain and simple.
Was/is the band there? The tree is actually the bands mascot(I know weird). Even though they say the tree isn't officially the teams mascot it really is...wouldn't surprise me if it was there without the band.
And yeah agreed the Cardinal are weirdos.
BTW did you know that Stanford was known as the Indians from 1930 to 1972 but have had the Cardinal nickname since 1891?
