There's a lot to be said about teaching your children at home, but let's face it, even if you're one of the most well-rounded geniuses in the world AND you happen to have a gift for teaching, combining to grant your children the main things they need to succeed intellectually in the world, you will invariably deny them the social development they also need by keeping them out of the social situations of school. To me it's just not worth it.

That is exactly how I feel. Any benefits you gain don't outweigh the negatives.

And for those sensitive viewers... I didn't say why are ALL home-schooled kids wacko, I said why are SO MANY home-schooled kids wacko. If I thought people would have feigned offense over my comments, I wouldn't have said them.

You know I'm not sensitive. :-D

Just had to point out the obvious in this article that this kid was screwed up in school and wanted revenge. Homeschool had nothing to do with it. Couldn't just slide by and not say anything on that one. ;-)

How can you determine homeschool had nothing to do with it? Especially if his mother was involved in teaching him? I'm not saying that it was responsible, but you certainly can't rule that out as a contributing factor. And yes, I realize that a lot of wacko students that do this kind of stuff are NOT home-schooled. My home-school comments in this thread were an observation, not an accusation.

Peace

For me it's cause and effect. Boy gets picked on in school, boy quits school, boy wants revenge. Pretty simple :-) . Nothing else is involved.

If the homeschool part had been left out of the article, it wouldn't have changed anything. Adding that part doesn't explain anything. One could say it was thrown in as part of a political agenda to make homeschool look bad because it had absolutely nothing to do with why the boy wanted to do what he was planning to do. I don't typically toss that kind of stuff out there about articles being politically slanted, and am not a fan of those that do, but really, the homeschool part of the article is 100% irrelevant to the whole thing. About the only thing it actually does other than try to make homeschool look bad, is it gives an "excuse" for people to blame, instead of blaming the boy and his mother. We see excuses all the time, as we live in a "no one's responsible for their own actions" world, so maybe that's why it was tossed in. Who knows? All I know is that part wasn't needed or useful in the least.

And a note that I never attended homeschool, or knew anyone who did. So I'm not defending homeschool or anything, just pointing out that it had nothing to do with this situation. I mean if it did, do you really believe the boy quit school because he was picked on, was fine and dandy about it, then homeschool made him decide to get revenge against those kids? Seriously? :-b

Home school kids are often different than regular kids because of their lack of social experience. Could this not have been behind him being picked on in the first place? Kids pick on each other... that's what they do. Maybe if he had been exposed to it earlier, he wouldn't have reacted so adversely? If either of these are true, how can you possibly say him being homeschooled is 100% irrelevant? I personally am unable to make that determination based on the article I read, but you disagree. Considering you're so positive home-schooling had nothing to do with it AND you mentioned politics (which I didn't even know this was a political issue), perhaps it's you that's letting your politics influence your judgement?

I personally don't feel that strongly one way or the other, but when you're so adamant that being home-schooled was irrelevant I'm going to question why you think so.

Hey, now... I was a business major and you have to have a 3.0 GPA to even get in the school of business. Considering how much I partied and how little I studied, me getting a 3.0 was like a responsibile student getting a... a... 5.0. :-? :-b

Wait, where did it say he was homeschooled prior to quitting school? Show me that and maybe you've got a point, but it's not in there. Possibly you misread?

I have no politics when it comes to homeschool. I honestly could care less if a kid goes to school, or if he's taught at home. As long as he/she gets a proper education, that's all I care about. This story is like saying:

Johnny lives in Florida. His father gets a new job in New York, so the family moves to New York. Johnny's shirt is green. Johnny likes Florida better than New York, so Johnny is sad.

Now for what purpose was it mentioned that Johnny's shirt was green? It's irrelevant and makes no difference in the story, so why include that? Makes no sense, just like this story mentioning the homeschooling after he left school for being picked on makes no sense at all.
