NFL Wire Notes |
Kitna's costume draws some flak
By Seattle Times news services

ALLEN PARK, Mich. — Detroit Lions quarterback Jon Kitna and his wife dressed up as a naked man and a fast-food drive-through attendant at a teammate's Halloween party, depicting an embarrassing moment for one of the team's assistant coaches.

Now Kitna is getting some flak from local media. Kitna, a former Seahawk and a Tacoma native, said he was just trying to have fun, but regrets the scrutiny the costumes created.

"If I would've known this, I wouldn't have done it because I didn't want to try to bring attention to it," Kitna said Wednesday.

Defensive-line coach Joe Cullen pleaded no contest to disorderly conduct and guilty to impaired driving after he was arrested twice last year, once after police said he was driving nude through a Wendy's drive-through lane, and a week later when they said he was driving under the influence of alcohol.

Cullen later was sentenced to two years' probation.

Lions coach Rod Marinelli said Kitna's costume was a nonissue with the team.

"It's Halloween," Marinelli said. "I'll leave it at that."

Kitna and his wife wore the costumes to a teammate's charity party, where the prize for the best outfit was a car.

"All I was trying to do was wear a costume that people would have fun with," Kitna said. "I wasn't trying to demean Joe. If he hadn't come so far, I would not ever have done it. He's very confident of who he is and is very peaceful about what's happened in the past.

"When we talked yesterday, the first question out of his mouth was, 'Did you win?' He seemed to not have a problem with it."

First of all - funny funny costume. Kitna's wife dressed up as a Wendy's girl. Too funny.

Anyway - the real story here is more about the local beat writers for the Lions. Drew Sharp wrote the scathing article about Kitna's costume, and it seems Sharp is the only person to be offended by it among the Lions family at all. Kitna even called Cullen and asked him BEFORE THE PARTY if he would be offended by it and Kitna received Cullen's blessing to go ahead with it. The truth is that there is a small war going on between some of the beat writers for the Lions and the players. Some of the beat writers, like Drew Sharp, never - ever write anything positive about this team and many of the players are calling them out on it - Roy, Furrey, Kitna, etc. So here it comes as no suprise that Sharp would spin this funny costume into something negative about the Kitna. Drew Sharp is a hack - he even new that Cullen wasnt upset at all before he wrote the article - dont let facts get in the way of a good story, eh?

Thanx for the local perspective and the real story. The way the papers are reporting it, it sounds pretty tactless - and it looks like the wire services picked it up and papers across the U.S. are running with it.

At least this Sharp guy doesn't spew his team bashing nationwide. Chicago is stuck with Jay Mariotti. :-P

The Kitnas' costumes were pretty funny. I don't want any pictures of Kitna though. :-b
The cake is a lie.

The story I read about this quoted Cullen as being disappointed that Kitna's costume didn't win the contest... it also stated that another teammate and his wife came dressed as the Kitnas, thumping Bibles and the like.

Seems like it was that sort of party, and that the writers being critical are just digging at thin air.

That is it in a nutshell. Also, I've heard that Kitna was trying to win the contest, where the winner receives a 4 wheeler....and if he did win, he was going to give it to Cullen. It was a harmless costume party between an NFL team and the media is trying to find a way to get something negative out of it...well done Drew :-t

The Lions are actually doing decent, so the local media can't find things to critisize compared to previous years.

Yes they can - guys like Drew Sharp and Rob Parker havent written a positive article about this team yet. They call the wins ugly and regularly question the coaching regardless of the outcome. Most of the beat writers are waiting for this team to collapse - you can tell by the tone of their writing. They think the Lions are winning despite of themselves and are only where they are because of the competition being poor.
